2nd District Candidate Arrested and Charged with Bringing Gun on Plane

Ironically, State Sen. Donne Trotter has notably opposed concealed carry legislation in Illinois.

State Sen. Donne Trotter was arrested Wednesday and charged with taking a firearm onto an airplane at O'Hare Airport, according to the Cook County State's Attorney's office.

A candidate to replace Jesse Jackson Jr. as the United States Representative for the 2nd District, Trotter said he had been at a job with a security firm the previous night and forgot he still had the weapon and ammunition in his bag.

Joe Berrios, the head of the Cook County Democratic Party, left it up to Trotter to decide his fate.

“It’s not for me to determine whether he wants to run or not,” Berrios told Sun-Times Media. “The committeemen will take that into consideration. If it is a felony, he would have to stand trial. At the end of the day, it’s going to be his decision. All I know, is he is a state senator, and a very good one.”

Frank Zuccarelli, the committeeman for Thornton Township, is still backing Trotter, according to Sun-Times Media.

“I am supporting him and he is my friend, I’m sure there is a good explanation for what happened,” said Zuccarelli. He said he had only communicated with Trotter by text. Trotter let him know he had been arrested. “We have to sit down and talk…I’m sure he’s together, Donne’s together. I’ve got confidence in him, he’s a good man.”

The primary election will be held on Feb. 26, with a general election on April 9.

Dated? We need a responsible representative that can help us get out of this fiscal mess. I assume you consider Mel Reynolds issues "dated" as well? I can only speculate why she was sued by two credit card companies. In the second district, this probably helps her odds of being elected.

If you think there's no difference between having financial problems paying your credit cards off, and raping an underage girl, you're messed in the head.

Obviously not comparing their problems. Maybe I wasn't clear? Would you hire someone who may have acted very financially irresponsible six years ago to fix your financial problems....wait don't answer that.

So Zucharelli is "Still supporting him because he is my friend", Don't matter if he is the right man for the job, but because of friendship. Got to love it.

I don't think this would matter much, just think how many folks who live in the district are facing these issues. It will just show she is normal like everyone else.

I agree, but this was in 2006, when the economy was rolling. Not that it matters.

You gotta love politicians who support/oppose legislation (concealed carry) that doesn't belong to them (because they put in carve-outs for security company personnel). Then in a moment of carelessness violate some other rule that some other politician forgot to put the carve-out in.

This will get written off as the careless mistake it is and nothing will happen to Trotter's campaign except that the publicity will do him good.
