A Policeman's Gold, A Bloom Retirement, A Unified Fundraiser

Let's take a look back at the most compelling, informative and thought-provoking Chicago Heights Patch stories of the week of Oct. 16-22.

 

Chicago Heights Police Officer Takes Gold (Tuesday, Oct. 18)

Chicago Heights Police Officer Ben Nguyen went to the World Police and Fire Games and competed against people from more than 50 countries. He walked away with a gold medal and to bronze medals.

His addition to our list of Remarkable Residents is well-deserved.

Giannetti Departs the Superintendent's Desk (Wednesday, Oct. 19)

Bloom 206 Supt. Glen Giannetti's retirement was announced this week, after it was accepted by the district's Board of Education. The retirement came on the heals of a stroke Giannetti suffered over the summer.

A Quick Look at Domestic Violence (Wednesday, Oct. 19)

In recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I teamed up with Homewood-Flossmoor Patch Editor Ryan Fitzpatrick to take a cursory look at some of the common issues that lead to ongoing domestic violence. We got some input from Chicago Heights Police as well.

Raising Money With the Drama Group, the Jones Center and Smokey Joe (Thursday, Oct. 20)

The Harold Colbert Jones Memorial Community Center has been in Chicago Heights for almost 100 years, shaping lives, and helping to raise children.

This past Thursday they took one more step toward saving that decaying roof, with help from the Drama Group of Chicago Heights. The Jone Center bought out the Group's newest show, Smokey Joe's Cafe, and sold the tickets to raise money.
