Can a Republican Take Jesse Jackson Jr.'s Old Seat?

Lenny McAlister thinks his chances are good, but will 2nd District voters look beyond the "R" on the ballot?

One Republican has entered the race to replace Jesse Jackson Jr. as the United States representative for the 2nd District.

Lenny McAllister has no legislative experience and has never won an election, but he's hoping to win a seat held by Democrats for more than 50 years. And let's not forget a Republican was unable to come close to beating a nigh-nonexistent congressman back in November.

Then there's the competition. Facing competition like Napoleon Harris, a former NFL running back who won a state senate race this year, or former U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson could prove a tall order for McAllister.

But the Hip-Hop Republican has hope.

He says that as a black Republican, he can bridge the gap between the South Side part of the district and the right-leaning Will and Kankakee sides.

It's true that McAllister is not your typical Republican. He tentatively supports affirmative action and is against anti-tax pledges with the fiscal cliff looming. McAllister is also against overturning Roe v. Wade, the well-known Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion.

But a less conservative Republican is still a Republican.

Can McAllister win in the 2nd District?

The Patch seems to be hinting that people are only considering candidates with a certain skin color and a nice smile/ physique. This seems like an odd way to choose a candidate. Isn't that a story in itself or is that something the Patch won't touch? Maybe the Patch should post resumes, grades and credit ratings for the public to view, after all, we are in a fiscal crisis.

Eh, that's how candidates in D2 get elected or you didn't notice the 100,000 dim bulbs that voted for Jackson?

Too bad a moderate GOP may be possible when the TParty is driven from power but not before a GOP congressman not toeing the Cantor-Nordquist line will be non existant on legislative and commitee matters,
A independent or regular GOP cmte assignment would be on the administration cmte to budget for toilet paper and such and would be incapable of doing anything meaningful .
so why run it has a lot to do with MONEY-PERKS CADDY HEALTH CARE and on and on nothing to do with serving the commons and people.
This wannabe believes he has a chance because he has not been in a mental facilty or charged like the rest have been that is a plus.
The 2IL is not known for sending the best and brightest to DC, no matter who goes either GOP or DEM he-she has to pay homage to the terrorist state of Israel if they want a career in state or national government these days no matter if u are from the East coast Midwest Nev, Calif, Az or a DIXIE CRACKER then to the Tparty for the GOP and 1%.

He lives in district in Chicago's South Shore area. He is the most humble servant of people I have met. He believes in term limits and has a genuine desire to do what the people of the 2nd district feel is best for their community. From my research his integrity is without question.

I’d like to hear more from Mr. McAlister on issues that are relevant to the 2nd. How he stands on all topics and what he plans to change and how will he go about doing it.

There are (at least) three odd things about this article. First off, there are quite a few candidates on the Democratic side, and the one who seems best positioned to win the primary (Toi Hutchinson) isn't mentioned at all. Second, we just had an election in which the Democratic party was stuck running someone whose political career was publicly flaming out, and a large majority of 2nd district voters voted for him anyway, presumably on the theory that our district's interests would be better served by an absent Representative than a Republican one. I don't think this has changed. Third, Mr. McAllister presents himself as moderate and thoughtful. That's not a type that makes it through Republican primaries these days.

Amen Stu, we need the thinking people of the 2 nd to tell these newly elected clowns they were elected to be a rep or st senator or whatever, we have not had a Cong rep for 20 years not 17 going back to Geo Sangmeister.
HARRIS and Hutchinson are elected to the Senate so one of them gets elected we are without a rep in the State Senate and if one lives in Chgo Sandi Jackson is also AWOL the people from the so side have been without any representation since these cursed Jacksons made their deal with Manny Hoffman and railroaded stupid Mel Reynolds they also have the charismatic Donnie Trotter the hit man with a 25 auto that he uses in his day job while voting against it for the peasants, this is worse than Benghazi UNLESS U ARE A DRUG DEALER.

http://www.ourcampaigns.com/RaceDetail.html?RaceID=781310 shows McAllister has a 90% chance of winning. He is raising substantial money and in this new district with disgruntled Democrats I believe his chances are excellent in this first race in this new district. More and more people are volunteering daily.

Keith, that website shows that Mr. McAllister has a better than 90% chance of winning the Republican primary, which is hardly the same as having a 90% chance of winning the general election.

Wake up people smell the coffee they the DEM'S cannot nor will do nothing for the 2nd dist, if u couldn't get a thing in 20 years of non rep why think any of them can do it with the Tparty in charge?
As a former Dem now Indep or Green who never voted for a GOP in any election, I am convinced for this district alone a GOP would be the only sensible vote,
The Dems are a minority now and will be in 14, it will not be possible TO ELECT A Dem congress until the new census in 20 when the gerrymandering will begin again.
No DEM can and will do a thing for this district but will be able to stay in office and get a cushy do nothing job and pension.A GOP rep will at least be in the majority party and this district needs help, the TPARTY and GOP will do a lot more for this district because of who they replaced and for the image and symbolism it is politics at it's worst and best.
