Chicago Heights City Hall Remains a Top Early Voting Site

Placing second in Cook County, Chicago Heights had nearly 2,000 ballots cast as of Tuesday.

As early voting comes to a close today, Chicago Heights City Hall remains one of the busiest locations in Cook County.

The Cook County Clerk's office released numbers that showed Chicago Heights to have the second highest turnout, with this past Monday being the busiest day of record for the County.

According to a statement from Clerk's office spokeswoman Courtney Greve, Wilmette had the only early voting site with a higher turnout than the Heights.

Greve ranked the top three sites in her statement:

The busiest sites after two weeks of Early Voting are in areas with contested races: Centennial Ice Rink in Wilmette (2,675); Chicago Heights Village Hall (1,757) and the Lemont Library (1,135).

The huge Heights turnout came with a slew of , as the City Hall site was bombarded March 14 with individuals pushing for particular candidates inside the building and even inside the voting area, according to early voters who were present. Some even tried to vote using identification that didn't match the voter registrations they brought with them.

The Clerk's office called on the Cook County Sheriff and the Chicago Heights Police Department for assistance in avoiding any more incidents at the site.

Mar. 24 the Rev. Lawrence Blackful Jr. and mayoral candidate Joseph Faso called for City Hall to be , with support from local clergy members, Integrity Party candidates and City Clerk Ethel Taylor.

Greve said that wasn't going to happen, but that the Clerk's office has kept a close eye on the site. Faso's opponent, David Gonzalez was supportive of keeping the site open through the duration of early voting.
