Chicago Heights People Never Say That? Facebook Friday

A video has gone viral in the Heights, but is it insulting the city or pointing out the truth?

Earlier this week, Chicago pop-rock band Workout Music posted a video on YouTube, supposedly pointing out things people from Chicago Heights never say.

The video pokes fun at crime in the Heights, as well as the idea that it is a predominantly low-income city. There are even some jabs at the Chicago Heights Park District and the State of Illinois DMV.

The video is attached to this article, but there is some profanity in it.

Some examples of things people from Chicago Heights never say, according to the clip:

"Is there a liquor store around here?"

"I don't know any Italian people though."

"I've never been in a fight."

The video was posted Tuesday and has leapt to more than 25,000 views.

While the comments on the actual YouTube page reveal a mixed reaction to the video, a few of our Facebook fans fell in love with it (or at least empathized). Here's what they had to say:

David Green: Love it!!!!!

Frank Goncher: Couldn't of said it any better!

Sharon Duncan-Cook: Been here 51 yrs...they got it down to the t....not proud to bash are city...but it is what it is...:(

Marc A Wiley: Wow is right

Star Kaminski: This is hysterical!

Ramie Formentini-Zara: I LOVE IT!!!! This was great still cracking up.

What do you think of the video? Funny or offensive?

Lived in Chicago heights for 29 yrs and this says it all. Maybe if the city made Chicago heights what it use to be the video may never have been posted. To be quite honest I find it very true. Take heed to the issue Chicago hts and fix it.

The young men in the video grew up in Chicago Heights. They are not being negative but just having fun. You can pretty much say those things about every town in America. I would hope people wouldn't take this so seriously. Lighten up!!!

What this is is an attempt to promote a show at the double door downtown. Not an attempt to degrade the city.Typical in the way the media would spin it as a negative. These guys grew up here in the Chicago Heights and still reside here. Not looking to fix anything just having fun with life the way it is. We all gotta LAUGH!!! Come see them at the Double Door. The concerts are even more FUN.

John,

I can assure you there was no attempt to spin the video as negative. This post was just an attempt to open up conversation about it. While I live in Chicago Heights, I didn't grow up here, so I didn't think it would be appropriate for me to comment on whether the video was accurate or not. That's why I included the poll, just to see what everyone thought.

As for the comment about 'mixed reviews' I was looking more at some of the comments left on the video than the likes and dislikes. Regardless, it seems the opinion is pretty much the same among Heights natives. It's pretty cool to see a video about Chicago Heights get so much attention.

Grew up there when I now know it was the south suburban version of Mayberry. Has changed but some of those sterotypes (as i'm polish and catholic) will never die. Lighten up and laugh.

One other thing - you mentioned that their YouTube had mixed reviews? I just checked it and there were 278 likes and 2 dislikes. I guess you can classify that as "mixed reviews" but it seems more like an overwhelming vast majority of people truly enjoying it and finding the true witty humor it provides!

Great point Ryan!! More people like this hilarious video than dislike it. If you are offended by it, and you live in the Heights, maybe you should MOVE. It is what it is. These guys have every right to make video expressing comedy (another form of art in addition to their music) about their hometown. Don't turn this into politics, people. It was meant as a joke and it was highly successful! Workout Music for the win.

The line about not knowing any Italian guys is that much funnier since it was said to an Italian guy. They're from the Heights(some for generations), still live there and just have great senses of humor. And they rock!
