UPDATE: Burning Pile of Material Seen at Medical Supplies Building
A fire on Lincoln Highway remains under investigation by the state fire marshal, but police say a door to the building was open when firefighters arrived.
The Prodigy Medical and Hospital Supplies building in the 400 block of Lincoln Highway was severely damaged in a fire Jan. 10.
The Chicago Heights Fire Department was called around 3:30 a.m. about smoke coming out of the side and top of the one-story building, said Fire Chief Tom Martello, who was at the scene.
"We were able to get here and extinguish the fire," Martello said. "The fire is being investigated by the state fire marshal."
Police blocked off Lincoln Highway from Division Street to Wilson Avenue, with emergency medical personel and multiple fire engines on the scene.
There were no reported injuries in the fire, but Martello said he would be able to provide more information at a later time.
Updated Jan. 12, 10:45 am.
Capt. Allen Shander of the Chicago Heights Fire Department told police that firefighters noticed the building's southwest corner door was open but the security doors were still secure. The firefighters also saw a pile of an "unknown material" burning inside the business near the southwest corner door, according to police.
Two vehicles left unattended at Unlimited Food and Liquor in the 400 block of Lincoln Highway were damaged in the Monday fire, according to police. A Volkswagon Passat registered to a man with a Pinehurst, NC, address parked near Prodigy Medical took "major fire damage" to its driver side door, police said, adding that an officer also saw damage on a Chevy van parked nearby.
