No Students Hurt in Fire at Elementary School

A space heater is blamed for burning a chair Tuesday in the library of Kennedy Elementary School in Chicago Heights, according to a District 170 official.

No students were injured in a small fire Tuesday afternoon in Kennedy Elementary School library.

A space heater is being blamed for burning fabric on a chair at around 1 p.m. Tuesday, according to a District 170 official. A maintenance worker walking by put out the fire.

“He extinguished it even before it could set off the heat detectors," said Anthony Leli, business manager for District 170.

Fire investigators have ruled the fire an accident and no citations have been issued, Leli said.

Students were evacuated at around 1 p.m. when the chair caught fire. It was contained to one part of the school library and only damaged the chair.

Students were present in the library during the incident but where unharmed, according to the district.
