It's obvious you have never tried to run a small business. Just because you have a road or bridge outside your company doesn't mean you are going to be successful. Besides, you and your company helped pay for that road with your taxes.
The federal government's role is providing for the common defense and establishing the rule of law. The federal government should have no other role in your life. Ever since the early 20th century, the federal government has been intruding more and more into areas where they have no constitutional authority.
Government has never generated a job and never will. They don't create wealth, they redistribute it or worse, destroy it. Their only revenue is taking money from the taxpayer. That is a zero sum game. Nothing is generated. The less federal government we have, the better off we will be.

And the business owners, small and large, PAID for those roads. The government generated ZERO money. Yes they are generating jobs IN THE GOVERNMENT, which means MORE OVERHEAD, even when the economy revives.

You are exactly correct. Thank you for putting President Obama's statement in to context. That is the problem with media outlets, they provide only a portion of the whole story in an attempt to create a stir, including the author of this article, Ms. Frillman.

Jim. Who pays for all of the government and public infrastructure that supports business? The hardworking, industrious, visionary entrepreneur pays for it all as do the employees hired by that person. The business support provided by the government sector is not a benevolence coming down from on high. It is created and supported in turn by taxpaying employers and employees. In a real sense the praise should definitely circle back to the people who have poured their lives into dreams and taken huge risks and created a few tax payers along the way. Obama's attitude and words do not reflect that fact. As Marco Rubio has said, "We need more tax payers, not more taxes."

I worked at two startups with a relative, both were successful but hard work and many challenges...long hours...not a magic formula...basic hard work, passion and a vision.
No government handouts or loans.
Not everyone wins at their endeavors, not trying will always make you winless!

Jim, if the credit is due to the gov't, roads, and banks, then how do you explain one business being very successful and another business using the same roads, banks, and gov't failing right next door? Could it be that the successful business owner did build it by being more savvy and working smarter? Couldn't He/She have filled the needs of customers better by knowing his market better and knowing what they actually needed, truly listened to the customers, and delivered in a positive and friendly manner? The role of gov't is only to create an environment that is conducive for successful business to thrive and then let the entrepreneurs build them.

We ALL have the same opportunities and those who build a successful business should be able to be proud of their accomplishments and not told "you didn't build that".

I couldn't agree more. For over 20 years I owned and operated a small business with 5 employees. The employees were a major reason for our success. My employees were educated by the public schools. Also, each one of them commuted to work by mass transit. Public infrastrucure is essential to business.

DG-I'll assume you're talking about George Jefferson - so while we're on that fictional subject, I believe George Jefferson received an SBA loan/business guidance to help finance his first and second business locations. A fire was put out once at his second dry cleaning location by the New York Fire Dept. and a couple of robberies thwarted by the police dept. (The nearby, self-built Biff Romney dry cleaners was very well-funded by the family and had its own 24-hour fire and security departments, George did not). The sidewalks in front of his shop were maintained reasonably well so no customers vanished between the cracks. And unlike Biff Romney down the street, he didn't have his own water purifying facility and was thankful that there were measures taken to ensure decent water quality standards. Both, however, had to comply with tyrannical EPA standards and not discharge excessive harmful chemicals from their businesses into the air and water. George didn't complain, whereas Biff went on a tirade that the government was trying to destroy his business and kill jobs.

No, DG Guy, that is not what Obama said. He's not condemning or minimizing intelligence and hard work. His words address those who claim their success is due SOLELY to their intelligence or hard work, and who deny the help they have received along the way.

The only valid criticism to that point that I have seen in this entire discussion came from Juvenal, who claimed that Obama deliberately set up a straw man in order to fire up his base. I believe he is wrong, because I believe there really are people who are (a) arrogant, (b) deluded, or (c) ungrateful (pick your adjective) enough to believe they created their success without ANY assistance from ANYONE. I also believe he is wrong because Obama's base is not composed of people who want to tear down anyone trying to achieve the American dream, despite what right-wing pundits will tell you. I've seen a lot of comments from people regarding this issue mentioning SBA loans and government assistance. My father started a business, I've started 2 myself and have worked for 3 startups. I have NEVER seen anyone get a loan from the government. I'm sure these SBA loans exist but I'm betting they are rarer than you think. This is part of the problem: There is an assumption that people cannot and do not make their own business. Somehow the government is funding it. You guys are buying into what the President is selling. Steve Jobs somehow needed you to make him who he was. The guy who owns a restaurant doesn't work harder than you. These people aren't special. Business owners are lucky and\or assisted by the government. You could do it you if you just filled out the paperwork. If you have ever tried starting a business that sentiment is deeply insulting.

As a nation, there is a basis for which anyone can build upon. Anyone can choose entrepreneurship and build from the basic platform (i.e. infrastructure) created by our society. Although we are all given that same platform, not all succeed in the same way. SBA loans do exist but are extremely difficult to get. I started my company with $500 and a favor. Sure, it was MY idea, it was MY concept, & was really just ME in the beginning. As the company grew, it was MY decisions (wrong or right) that helped to shape the course of our growth. Could I have done this without that basic infrastructure, of course not. I also could not have done it at all without the equipment & programs I had to purchase from other entrepreneurs. I could not have done it without my exceedingly patient children and a husband who made sure the bills got paid when I wasn't receiving a salary. NOW...in the midst of the 2nd worst financial crisis our country has ever seen, my company grew 400%. No, I am not exaggerating in the slightest. Now, do I look at that and say, "I did that?" Sure, but only to an extent. I am not so naive or self centered to not realize that the employees who bust their butts and do amazing work are not enormous contributors to MY success. I am not so shallow as to not be thankful for every client who recommended me and gave me glowing reviews. I am not so grown that I can't look back & pin point a few certain teachers that helped me realize my potential and set me on an early path...

There are many very, very smart people out there who could not be successful entrepreneurs. There are also many people who may or may not have high school diploma and go on to build empires. So no, being "SMART" does not guarantee you success in anything. The president was 100% correct in what he said and those are reading his words out of context need to read it as if came from your Mother. Besides, Romney said the EXACT SAME THING, almost verbatim in a globally televised speech to Olympians in 2002. I'm sorry but when it was comes to being an Olympian, you really do kind of have it or you don't but even still, there were people along the way coaching, supporting and HELPING.

Governements create jobs to get votes and stop rebellion... small business creates jobs to meet demand... there is a difference. Government isn't the answer to the people ... it is the servant of the people... let's get that relationship back in persepctive pretty soon - it is all wacked out of perspective right now,with Government servants trying to tell the people, rather than listen to the people... it is a fundamental flaw that needs an immediate reversal of reality...

The "you didn't build that" line is taken out of context but the rest of the speech is damning. He clearly said success isn't because you are smart. He said lots of people are smart. He said success isn't because you're hard working. He said lots of people are hard working. Then he talks about infrastructure. The story he is pushing is that success is not yours, but rather came from those around you. No single person is great. This is, I think, the exact opposite of the American dream.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting

It would have been helpful for you to post his entire statement. But no, you much like most of the media, do not want that because there would be no story. Mitt Romney said almost exactly the same thing. So where is the outrage at him?

Gary - I know plenty of people who own their own business are extremely wealthy and pretend they got there by themselves. In truth, they got a paid college education (thanks to their parents and/or grandparents), and started their business with free office space (again thanks to parent) and an interest free loan from said parent (with no pay back date) and will argue, they did it. Were they responsible for it staying successful? Yes. But don't act like these handouts didn't help them along the way.

The full context in no way diminishes the state-centric view Obama expressed. Who do you think 'somebody' is? It's the people who built businesses and employed taxpayers. Try reading up on your history...look into the history of the Golden Gate bridge as an example of roads and bridges...Government rarely leads...and when it does, it seldom makes 'wise' investments with other people's money (e.g., Solyndra).

How about YOU brush up on your history? The Civilian Conservation Corps would be a great place to start. Cherry-picking capital projects to prove your point is pretty transparent.

Yes, Obama believes and talks about the community of people. We give and build as individuals, but never totally without each other. It is simply humanity. And yes, he was referring to the "roads and bridges". Obama very much believes in small business and wants to help small business. But we have to help each other too.

That requires long-term thinking. We just don't think that way any more as a society. It's what can I get today that counts. We don't build businesses any more. We gut them. We outsource them. We encourage short-term thinking that may be profitable today but is the blueprint for failure tomorrow. The people who built our most successful businesses are gone and those businesses have fallen into the hands scavengers. Executives hired for their short-term strategy and paid handsomely for cutting costs and making the bottom line look good just long enough to fool the market. There's no sense of ownership or loyalty. Just greed that will be rewarded by compensation committees at the next company looking for a bump in the bottom line. Gone are the likes of J.P. Morgan who saved the banking industry in 1907 because he had a long-term stake in it. We don't have the patience to build businesses. We're more interested in creating wealth than business or jobs. And if we can do that without breaking a sweat, so much the better. We prefer the lucrative investment scheme over the nose to the grindstone approach of our forebears. We reward short-term thinking by taxing investors returns at a lower rate than other income because we delude ourselves into believing that these investments promote jobs and growth. Here's the problem: he didn't say, "on your own." He probably meant it, and, had he said it that way, Romney still would use it against him and Obama would still claim "out of context."
You did, in one way, build your business on your own: You had the same societal platform upon which to build it as everyone else. If the foundation is equal for everyone (roads, internet, customers, etc.), and all of us are paying taxes into that then it's pretty much a wash. You are not getting special treatments that others are not allowed to have. So, while it was a group effort, at a societal level, it was the owners and their hires that build businesses since everyone has the same foundation. That's why this is all a moot argument.
The real discussion, that eludes just about everyone these days, is that your success is built on previous generations building a better platform for you, and, if success puts in at the same rate as non-success, we have a form of societal stagnation. Success needs to put in relative to itself, not to the lack of success of others.

Melissa - I'm guessing that you're not a member of the Chamber of Commerce. I don't think they'd go along with such apostasy. It's always enjoyable to read comments that are common sense and pragmatic - such as yours or even Tom Stern above. He really hit it on the head that if your product has no demand, you can't (and shouldn't) try to create jobs. From the size of your organization, I would surmise that your product/service is in demand and you'll continue to grow. The very best to you.

Romney (among many others from both parties) said much the same (and often times exactly the same thing), along with taking endless financial and other benefits from the government and elsewhere during his years starting up and running Bain Capital.

But I guess that it only matters when Obama makes the exact same (and correct) points...at least to those who already opposed his policies, record and accomplishments in office actually assisting small businesses and their owners succeed.

If Obama has accomplished anything positive for us, he should focus his campaign on those accomplishments. If a campaign is run by an incumbent solely on attacking his opponent, he has done nothing positive for the country. He doesn't deserve a second term.

Saying that the economy failed because the Democrats took over in January 2007 is a joke. It makes a good story, but it's not real. Deregulation and lack of oversight caused this crisis. War in the middle east that helped triple the price of oil (and yes, it was based on lies) hurt the world economy too.

The banking industry used to require a credit score of 640 and 20% down to buy a house. But in 2002-2006, they were making so many hundreds of millions from loans that they relaxed that to a credit score of 500 and no money at all down. Then after they wrote the loan, they bought insurance (which later proved to be worthless) on those loans and the lack of regulations then allowed them to take that debt off their books and write more loans. They made bets that only would’ve worked if real estate prices had only gone up and never gone down. That is not how the world works.

The article was a study from Farleigh Dickinson University, a Liberal Arts college in NJ.....the poll consisted of slightly over 600 residents of NJ....the study questioned listeners knowlege regarding the middle east. My comments were regarding the integrity of the "newchannel" (abc,msnbc,FOX). Also, had you really read the article opposed to googling and attempting to cherrypick a headline you would notice that the article quote "MSNBC didn’t do all that much better". Furthermore the study shows that viewers who were the most knowledgable were those who watch Jon Stewart. That will tell you who they werte polling, how the questions were asked, and how the results were compiled. Sorry but you are simply off base. As far as news organizations goes, FOX news beats them all...even your beloved MSNBC who did no better. It's just FOX showed up in your Google because they were mentioned in the headline.

Obama did inherit the failures of the Dem-controlled 110th session of Congress.

As of 12/31/2006, unemployment was 4.4% and the federal debt was ~$8.7T. Three days later, on 1/3/2007, Dems took total control of both houses of Congress.
