Monday was all about healing, one way or another.

With American soldiers coming home from overseas conflicts, Mayor David Gonzalez kept his speech focused on helping returning veterans keep their heads above water.

"We have to make every opportunity to help these returning soldiers find jobs," said Gonzalez. "It's great they're coming home, now we can take care of them."

Warmth radiated the corner of Route 30 and Chicago Road as Ald. Wanda Rodgers sang God Bless America. Others joined in.

Chicago Heights resident Andy Suppes, who helped design the Veterans Wall on the Mound, bowed his head and tried to keep his emotions in check. It was a time to pay homage to those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
