Post Questions for the 2nd District Congressional Candidates

In much the same way we executed the Minutes with the Mayor series on Chicago Heights Patch and Homewood-Flossmoor Patch, we're planning to ask the candidates questions from their potential constituents.

The race for the Illinois Second District Congressional seat is arguably one of the most important races of the year for those of us who live in the district.

With Election Day just two months away (sooner for you early voters) it's becoming increasingly important to know more about these candidates and their plans.

Incumbent Jesse Jackson Jr. has had a rough year to say the least, and his opponents, Brian Woodworth and Marcus Lewis, are looking to unseat a man who has held the same spot for nearly 18 years.

Over the past two months we've heard plenty of comments on Jackson's health, but we have not heard much about the candidates' platforms and plans. What makes these three so different from each other? Are any of them deserving of federal elected office? If so, who will do the most for the district?

In order to make your decision at the polls just a little easier, we'll be reaching out to all three candidates to have them answer your questions. So ask away!

Post questions in the comments that all three candidates can answer. After we've racked up enough questions, we will conduct a poll to determine the top questions and relay them to the candidates in an interview.

I saw it and believe you are a creature of your environment and the apple don't far from the tree. There are no coincides and facts are facts I believe the President was the one who took God and Jerusalem out of the democratic Party Platform. 2016 shows some scary implications that everyone should be aware of before voting. There was an eerie feeling in the air walking out of the theater that day.

Congressman Jackson, My Question. Why should we vote for someone who is not mentally stable, and is being treated in a mental ward. This country is facing many large problems. Would you hire someone in that condition to do your job?

Brian Woodworth, why should a majority African American district cast their votes for a white candidate when there are two African American men, both qualified to hold the position, seeking office?

Worst question in the history of all questions. James Taylor, is that seriously something you'd like to know, or are you just being an ignorant racist fool? The U.S. is made up of approximately 63.7% white and 12.2% black. Does that mean Obama should not have won the presidency because as a white person I should only vote for a white, or as a black person I should only vote for a black? Get real, man!

Thank for your question...
There is few economic engines in the South Suburbs. An airport is not the type of job creator I would suggest. We need manufacturing and research & development in our district badly. Our district suburbs are mainly residential which is fine but there needs to be a balance to lower the residential property taxes and increase the tax base to help the residents to contribute in job creation and give the young a thought that they can see industry they may want to work at or visualize their own dreams how a community thrives.

We must have more than just homes of different kinds, we need industry for sustaining of our communities and we have open land for that to occur without a large footprint to do it.

I will file bills that will penalize American companies that continue to manufacture products in China or else where to have onerous tariffs on those products.
This would give them the message that making the products in America would be a great idea. So get ready to repatriate back home to America and to the 2nd Congressional District of Illinois. You will be welcome if your industry is a good fit for what we see as good for the district constituents.

Mr. Lewis has already answered some of these questions before on this site, and for that I applaud his openness and transparency. I have some of my own that I think are interesting though, so I will post them:

1.)Recently legislation has passed the House that would require an audit of the Federal Reserve. As a candidate do you support an audit of this "secretive body? Why or why not?

2.) There has been a disturbing trend lately of shootings in this country, although gun violence has always been a problem in the Southland these recent shooting have brought the issue into the national spotlight. Do you support legislation that would restrict gun ownership in our communities?

3.) The addition of Kankakee and rural communities to our congressional district have added a new group of people to our political discussions. Kankakee particularly is faced with blight similar to what some communities in our area already face. Will you agree to visit Kankakee and talk to the people there about their problems?

4.) What do the words "liberty" and "freedom" mean to you?

Although I sympathize with Cong. Jackson and his family during this distressing time, I believe he needs to drop from the current race for his seat. He clearly is not able to work and it is unfair to leave the 2nd district in limbo. It isn't as if he's been an irreplaceable representative, but the voters are entitled to believe there is capable representation for them in D.C. I don't believe his staff is really capable of "carrying on" during this time. With redistricting and his illness, the voters have an opportunity at this time to elect someone new who will bring new life and a compettne skill set to this office. I don't have a recommendation between the two present candidates. I know how I will vote, but I hope everyone else will try to make a thoughtful decision.

Hi John, here are my answers to your questions...

1.What is your stand on requiring churches to pay for birth control?
I would not put any requirement of this kind on the church because of the the First Amendment, i.e., Freedom of Religion.
2.What would you cut first to balance the budget?
Defense. There is a known build in valley of wasteful items that even the Pentagon does not want...so why in God's Name would we (Congress) continue to fund them?!
3. Is there anything you would change in the health care reform act?
Yes, I rewrite the bill to raise it to a Single-Payer Status.
4. What will be your top priority after getting elected?
Filing bills for a massive jobs bill such as was done in the 1930's, i.e., WPA Programs, introducing bills for education grant programs for college-bound students so the need for loans would wither on the vine. This Federal Government must step up and not allow our nations children to be saddled with "mortgages" after they graduate from college. We can and We will do better by our young people and give them the breaks many need as "OUR" gift to them by investing in their & our country's future. Premeditated Ignorance will not be tolerated by me as your congressman whatsoever.
5. What is your stand on cutting retired m!ilitary benifits?
Why?! You love the soldier but want a policy to cut the veteran's benefits. I won't stand for it.

6. Do you support the death penalty?
No.
7.What is your stand on gun control?
As I have said before, I believe in the U.S. Constitution and thereby the 2nd Amendment. But what the average American fails to remember, "With great power, comes great responsibility." Meaning there must be standards for the gun and the bullet. That's why there is a standard on the purchase of alcohol as you MUST be 21. Or driving a car the age in Illinois to gain a license is 18. reasonable standards not open-ended do as you please mindset is dangerous for both the gun holder and the population at large. And as an addition, I am finding the so-called criminal had currently better watch out for the so-called law abiding citizen. Most of the last mass killings were done by people that had no history of violence. Guns are too idolized and ammunition is too cheap and available to obtain. Mix all this with alcohol, stresses of daily, frustrations in life, drugs and mental fragility is a recipe for someone to be shot and killed in a moments notice. We can and We must recognize we MUST have standards when it comes to lethal weapons and ammunition.

8.What is your stand on abortion?
I am pro choice. It is the woman that carries the child, so she must answer to God for her choice to either carry her child to term or not. as we all must stand before Almighty God to give an account of all we have done in this mortal body whether it be good or bad.
9.Would you be willing to debate the other candidates?
We are planning debates at this very writing so look out for the schedule of them. They will be posted here on Patch.
10. What is your feeling on term limits?
We have them already, they are called elections. If you want to change a person that you don't like their stances on the issues compared to your own and after talking with him or her you get no where and compromise has failed, then you must organize and plan to run someone you do agree with. If they do not win then repeat the process. But to say you want your way or you MUST have your way then the Old Soviet Union will love you because that is what they had as their way of thinking. This is a democracy. We have give and take, push and pull, or in other words we have adopted "COMPROMISE" in our form of government and it has worked pretty well till as of late when "my way or the highway" as jumped in to hi-jack our way of living with each other. But as with life balance will take over and this too shall pass.

Thank you for your questions.

Should taxpayer money be used to end the life of the unborn?? Should the millions of people who pay taxes that DO NOT believe in abortions unless in cases of x,y, or z have to fund the ending of an unborn life?? The question is whether TAXPAYER money should be used to fund these abortions, not whether a woman has the right.

NotBuyingIt,

As most people that know knows or should know the Henry Hyde Amendment prohibits the Federal Funding of abortions.

Have you anything else on your mind other than the republican 'parroting' every election cycle of abortion, 2nd Amendment issues? How about come up to reality and ask what my views are on those Americans that are struggling with "LIVING" trying to educate themselves and their children that are "alive" and holding on to a job or retirement issues or putting food on the table or keeping a roof over one's head or finding employment for college graduates etc etc etc.

Have you ever pondered on these things ever? Or are you so narrow-minded that your issues you continue to regurgitate have been either addressed or answered over the years. Ask something new that is happening now that affect daily living.

Surely you are dealing with something else other than scheming how not to pay any taxes or insuring NONE of your tax dollars are put in a pot where God forbid will go to assist an American you don't like. Don't you get tired being the way you are?

The real story behind the claims by Marcus Lewis and Joe Lake that Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. and others paid the City News not to write another article about Marcus Lewis. Both seemed to believe that if they could intimidate the City News through repeated slander on this blog, filing a false complaint with the FBI naming the City News and in other areas, to lie and claim that Jackson paid the City News $40,000 not to write about Lewis that Jackson would be removed from the ballot and charged under ethics laws and perhaps criminal laws. However, what both these individuals did not know is that the City News would not bend to their threats and lies. We have filed a formal complaint with the Federal Elections Commission against Lewis for trying to influence the upcoming election through intimidation. Perhaps it will be Lewis who will be removed from the ballot.

Amazing how Taylor looks for an audience that does not know the facts that it was James Taylor on July 31, 2012, called me and for one whole hour, tell Joe Lake and myself ( Joe Lake was listening the whole time on the phone call) that he got an email from Sandi Jackson on July 16, 2012 to come to her house the next day and he went and found Jesse Sr. in the living room sitting on the couch. Taylor said from his own mouth describe how Sandi & Jesse Sr. offered him $25,000 off of the Triple J Campaign not to write any further stories on me and my campaign. Taylor called me that night of the 17th of July 2012 informing me of what happened.

Taylor in the conversation to Joe Lake and myself said he got the check and showed it to his lawyer and Taylor said his lawyer told him since he was not a government official and it was not a bribe he could keep the money. Taylor said he was gonna keep the money. Jesse Sr. later offered Taylor another $15,000 cause Taylor had run the article on me for a second week in a row not to let that happen again.

What the FBI has is a "first hand" account from Taylor's lips to our ears to the FBI.

Filing a false complaint with the the FBI is subject to a maximum of five years in a Fed Pen and a maximum fine of $250,000. Also lying to a Federal agent or Federal Grand Jury, the same. I'm sure there are similar penalties for filing a false complaint with the FEC. Joe Lake, Chicago and Marcus Lewis, Independent Candidate For Congress of the 2nd District.

I am not intimidated for telling the truth. It was from Taylor, ask him why he said it.

The difference between arrogance and go getters is one simply talks his life away thinking he is going somewhere he is not headed, The sad part is the arrogance has actully blinded the person and he thinks he sees. It is like watching travel programs and telling yourself you visited that destination but never left your living room.

I am a go getter and whether I win or lose I am on the ballot & positioned myself to win especially at this time and place in history. Where is your name? You are all hat and no cattle. I don't listen to do nothings and cry babies. As far as I am concerned I can win and will win this election. Nobody is listening to you but people that think and act like you. But progress would not begin with you anyway and it sure won't end with you.

Here is something for you to do instead of running your mouth and getting more any of my time, give your brain something it does not get very often: information for a change.

Here's why my chances are great to win:

Office of Congressional Ethics... Report and Findings [Jesse J, Jackson Jr., 244 Pages], Jesse Jackson Jr.'s Response... and More. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ILCD2ndDistrict/message/23
Joe Lake, Chicago

Whatever you say after this comment I won't care to know or comment.

I never knew a turkey could fly. And to your mindset, I'm not buying it.

LMAO. Yes you are on the ballot. I have to give you that, but your campaign is dead in the water before it even started. Your name came up the other day at Bocces, even folks in your own town think you are a joke and a plant. 1 percent of the vote, from what I hear your own neighbors think you are a joke. GOOD LUCK. Thanks for the continued laughs.

Filing a false complaint with the the FBI is subject to a maximum of five years in a Fed Pen and a maximum fine of $250,000. Also lying to a Federal agent or Federal Grand Jury, the same. I'm sure there are similar penalties for filing a false complaint with the FEC. Joe Lake, Chicago

Joe, we seem to have the Jesse Jackson Jr. supporters here on this blog. My they like corruption and the status quo. Truly I see this district needs a lot of assistance to flush away the mentality of only the Jacksons can have this seat and how dare this newbie challenge the corruption that took decades to put in place. I will press forward in-spite of.

The despicable way Jr sent his Indian emissary to tell the over his head Governor anything he wanted to hear knowing fully it was a lie like everything he did since being appointed to congress by the GOP ZIONISTS and daddy's Corporate operatives.yep he is as CORPORATE as any OIL OR BAIN EXEC.
Blago and Jr are by products of separate SMELL (Mell) and Push organization both of them are or were on the public payroll by nepotism not because they have outstanding charismatic abilities or are good in memorizing, they are as transparent as the Cheney's without a brain it is amazing the son of a preacher who never had a job in his life except extorting from enemies and friends has accumulated so much stash in his So Side HQ.
Blago is doing country club time for a long time and Jr is hiding out from the ethics cmtee. away from the other mentals shooting at and on school buses and drive by's and will be reelected by the mama's and the dead beat dad's alike, god wants them to vote for Jr so forget the honesty and clean government stuff.

Questions for all candidates (even though Lewis is the only one answering them):
1.) Do you support a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution? If not, why not? If so, how will you get us there?
2.) What types of bills/projects will you work to pass to get Americans back to work?
3.) Do you support drug testing for welfare candidates or recipients?
4.) The U.S. is becoming more of a service country rather than a manufacturing country. However, it is well known that manufacturing is what made this country what it is today. What incentives/programs/negotiations will you offer to corporations sending manufacturing jobs overseas to bring them back?
5.) Do you support or oppose firearm registration? Why?
6.) Do you feel there should be campaign fundraising caps? Why or why not?

Why has the Chicago Tribune failed to include Independent candidate Marcus Lewis in it's news accounts and why is the Politics Now program featuring Brian Woodworth and not allowing Lewis equal time. After all, should not all candidates get equal time to present their agendas? Is the exclusion of Lewis connected to the fact that the Tribune endorsed Brian Woodworth and how many African Americans are a part of the Tribune Editorial Board?

My questions to all the candidates ~ 1. How do you feel about the same term limits for Congress like they have for the President? 2. What programs can be put into placed to help educate the ex-offenders so they can be re-entered into society with some form of employment? 3. Where do we go from here if the airport never happens?
I had the pleasure of sitting in on an interview for Comcast Cable with my media partner as we interviewed Candidate Brian Woodworth. Great interview! We have reached out to all but no response. I commend James Taylor and his Newspaper for great coverage. Rev. Anthony Williams is running as a write in and it is possible to win as a write in. I won in 1996 as a write in for the library district. If all fails, call for a Special Election and Elect a Woman! Me!!

OK, Mr Lewis----I cant imagine voting for someone who cant even understand the premise that this was a place for citizens to post questions for the patch editors to pose to all three candidates so that the citizens could compare their answers side by side and get some idea of why to vote of not vote for each.

You have turned this into a melee with all you posts where they are inappropriate.

Ms. Whitehand,

I now see you have posted in several places on September 22nd, 2012, how this forum was supposed to go as questions posed to all three candidates. This forum was started on September 5th, 17 days prior.

As you can well see without proper supervision there are others that from the outset have abused this forum and are bad mouthing me though I have tried to do what is expected and answer queries as they came.. It is unfortunate that there was no earlier referee to monitor what has transpired since.

I appreciate the forum but there are trolls on your site that have used this Patch Network to verbally incite hate instead of doing what was asked and that is to ask questions for the candidates to respond and give an answer to them. I have been the only participating candidate thus far. So that should account my good faith..

This is an interesting thought.

Many people wonder why Republican legislators are so hard on President Obama and also Republican voters here on Patch on Marcus Lewis who is running for Congress.
.
Frederick Douglass gave us the answer many years ago:

“Though the colored man is no longer subject to barter and sale, he is surrounded by an adverse settlement which fetters all his movements.”

“In his downward course he meets with no resistance, but his course upward is resented and resisted at every step of his progress.”

“If he comes in ignorance, rags and wretchedness he conforms to the popular belief of his character, and in that character he is welcome; but if he shall come as a gentleman, a scholar and a statesman, he is hailed as a contradiction to the national faith concerning his race, and his coming is resented as impudence. In one case he may provoke contempt and derision, but in the other he is an affront to pride and provokes malice.”

Frederick Douglass

Hello Mr. Lewis,

While we won't be hosting a public forum, we hope to have you and Mr. Woodworth address some of these questions on camera. If you would like to set up a forum in for your South Suburbs voters, I would recommend contacting groups such as the League of Women Voters. They are much more versed and experienced with those types of events than we are.

Thanks.
