Second Nature: What Happens When You Lose Everything?
This week, Jacquelyn Mitchard takes us into a wonderful tale of love, loss, and betrayal.
I found this book by mistake. I had a long list of books that I wanted to read, but one day I forgot that list at home. So, I saw that this book was recommended in my copy of Entertainment Weekly. I decided to see if we had it on shelf and lucky for me, we did. I am glad that I forgot my list that day!
This book was amazing. The lead character, Sicily Coyne, is stubborn, hard-headed, and looking for an acceptance she didn’t even know she wanted! The book takes us on a ride that is up and down and all around emotional! There are surprises that keep you guessing along until the end. Several times, I thought I had figured out what was going to happen only to be surprised time and time again.
The book starts off with a fire at Holy Angels Catholic School the day before Christmas break. Several lives are saved, however, several are also loss, including Sicily Coyne’s father. Sicily herself is badly burned by the fire and is left with a disfigured face that even after thirty facial reconstructive surgeries, cannot be fixed. Her life is okay, despite this. She’s engaged, she has an incredible job, and an incredible aunt that adopted her after the death of her mother. However, all that changes on the day that should be one of the happiest for her.
Left with no one to turn to, Sicily takes matters into her own hands and begins to live the life that she didn’t even know she wanted, until she tasted it. The book gives you hope and has you cheering along with the characters as Sicily faces tough decision after tough decision, all in the name of love.
