Will County Jail Inmate Afraid Guards Going To Kill Him
A Harvey man in jail on a burglary charge out of Frankfort says he is afraid correctional officers will kill him for lawsuits he filed alleging he was beaten and abused.
Six months after he was locked up in the Will County jail on burglary and theft charges, William Jenkins said guards bashed his head against a shower stall wall before pushing and punching him during a strip search.
Six months after that alleged attack, the 29-year-old Harvey man said members of the jail's black-clad Emergency Response Team locked went into his cell and beat him so badly he was sent to the medical wing for two weeks.
Jenkins sued six different deputies—three in connection with each alleged attack—shortly after the respective incidents. And now he fears he will be killed for blowing the whistle, said his lawyer.
"That's exactly what he is alleging," said Joliet attorney John Schrock, adding that Jenkins is in "serious fear of his life."
The Frankfort police arrested Jenkins in October 2011 after he and Dolton man Ira Cunningham, 33, were allegedly caught breaking into a house on Linden Drive. Cunningham has since been convicted and is pulling a 16-year prison sentence.
Jenkins remains in jail as he case crawls through court. And Schrock says that after two beatings—the second in retaliation for taking legal action—his client is gravely afraid he will die before making it to trial.
Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas, the spokesman for the Will County Sheriff's Department, says he has not seen either lawsuit and cannot comment on pending litigation.
The first lawsuit, filed in June, says Jenkins and other inmates were herded into a shower for a strip searchg in April. Jenkins and a guard then "engaged in verbal dialogue regarding the process," and two Emergency Response Team members descended on Jenkins, knocking his head off a wall and then beating him.
The second lawsuit, filed late last month, claims members of the Emergency Response Team beat Jenkins while he was locked down in his cell. The lawsuit also says Jenkins has filed grievances with jail administration about the alleged attacks and that the grievances have been denied.
Schrock said abuse of inmates is rampant at the county jail.
"If an inmate mouths off to someone, it does not give them the right to hit them," Schrock said.
"I think it's a problem at the Will County Adult Detention Center, particularly with the ERTs," he said. "If you ask the inmates, when you see the ERTs come out, you know somebody's going to get tuned up. It's a subliminal message they're sending."

I am sure these allegations are baseless and without merit! The felon is looking for sympathy and a light sentence. His lawyer, as all lawyers do, is setting the table for a deep pocket law suit. Yes, I know, innocent until proven guilty...Can't come soon enough for me. I hope he gives society a break for 16 years like his burglar buddy!

This is just another case of someone wanting sympathy and money. An obvious exageration of the actions of a very necessary and competent group of deputies. They have teams like this to deal with the worst inmates. Maybe he should be a model inmate while he sits in jail and we as tax payers pay for his food and medical needs. Maybe then he won't be so well acquainted with the Emergency Response Team.

Inmates in jail in this country are spoiled. Thats why jail is not a deterrant to crime. I don't believe they should be beaten, but they shouldn't have the same rights as law-abiding.citizens. If he had known jail might be this bad maybe he would have had second thoughts about breaking into someone's home. Lets hope all the other thugs out there are following his story. Maybe they will learn something: jail is NOT just another place to crash.

So this is the America that is acceptable to you? Beating those who are arrested? Are you kidding me? The guy might be a scumbag and probably is, but if these are the standards that are acceptable to you there is a fundamental problem with the way you and others think. I thought we were better than this. Maybe we should embrace the Gulag & Turkish prisons.

I love the ignorance you convey through the racial undertones of your suggestion. Also, your understanding of the English language greatly undermines your credibility: please substitute "needs" for "need," don't capitalize "Good" and get the dialect right (I assume you are striving for this) w/ "whooping" instead of "whupping." What an ignoramus! They should lock you up and beat you for being stupid.

Then you try to downplay your stupidity by using big words and attacking grammar and spelling.. Pathetic! I bet you can turn just about any conversation involving black people into a racist debate...

This is a really serious matter that goes on more than you might think in will county jail.I had an unfortunate stay for a day and a half in 2011 for failure to appear for a traffic incident, which i had forgotten about. In that time frame i witnessed the ERT's come into e-pod and beat an older gentleman unconcious becauze he didnt lay on the floor fast enough when they entered the facility. Protocol requires for them to videotape each time they are involved in an incident with inmates, and they dragged the man unddr the stairwell out of view of the camera before to guards tazerd him and beat him while he was down and unconcious. They allowed the female guard to continue the beating even after he was down, and they threatend ths rest of the inmates by saying if they didnt look down and away we would be next. I witnessed them calling inmates p**sy, bitches and other derogatory names that im sure are not professional and acceptable to say. Now, let me reiterate, i was there for a traffic violation, i am not a criminal. i dont advocate for inmates, but there is a such thing as professional courtesy and i first hand witnessed the verbal and physical abuse that was uncalled for. Im sure nkt all of the gentleman thsre were thsre by their own volition, and this country has a little thing called due procsss which as americans we are al entitled to. These ERT's are trained by cook county,@ maybe that might be necessary in that facility due to the volume of inmates.Thats nt neededhere

Steveisqueer, you shouldnt speak about things which you know nothing about, you come off as a condescending jerk. If it was your son, daughter, family member or even you being assaulted by one of those thugs in uniform u would be singing another tune. Not everyone coming through those walls are violent, menaces to society. Some people make honest mistakes like forgetting court dates or missed child support payments. Those people shouldnt be subject to physical, verbal or mental abuse. They have a job to do, understandable, but many C.O.'s abuse their position and its not reported about because they tend to settle out of court. B4 u comment recklessly, do your research and see how many times the jail settled out of court and fired their own over the last decade due to misconduct. Did u know they had to pay out inmates for violating rights by illegal strip searches and beatings in the past 5 years? Probably not because u speak with blind ignorance and bigotry rather than doing your homework.Theres no excuse for the way they handle inmates down there and unfortunately the public may never know until someone inside blows the whistle. The last deputy who tried to expose corruption within the dept. was fired and harrased and she's never been seen again.Did u know that???? Google it!!!!!

"I am sure beatings have gone rampant(NOT)."
And then you say:
"Bring on the beatings jail guards!!!"
Okay, so you yourself advocate for rampant beatings. Guess what, you don't have to advocate for them, they already happen. And when you beat a criminal in jail, guess what happens? He gets to leave sooner. Is that what you want? Criminals getting out of jail sooner? If so, that's what you've gotten. Good job on supporting the release of dangerous criminals back into society.

You know what I think happened? There was a strip search, Jenkins didn't like it, he got loud and mouthed off to the guards, he wouldn't shut his mouth, got belligerent, said a few magic words, got aggressive, had to be taken down, kept resisting, kept screaming and cussing at the guards and therefore probably had to be forceably restrained. He's probably exaggerating what happened to get money or be sent to another faculty.

I know people that were let out of prison early due to being beaten by guards,I know people beaten damn near to death by Will county and Joliet police...Crest Hill officers also...if you did something wrong and got caught then you got caught..it's all of these beatings, police brutality that keeps letting people out of jail or prison early...I have seen charges dropped against people because they were beat by the police..now that's some bull...keep your hands off of them or you cross the line of being a criminal also...which will end up letting them go...I saw a 5 time felon walk from prison early because he got burned by a broiler he was working on...and sued...so we end up letting criminals out with thousands of dollars when an office or officers beat someone...that's the reverse effect of what their job is to do...how can you send a man to prison when you beat him half to death for his crime?

They may kill him, but it'd be by way of denial of medications that he needs to live like blood pressure, heart, or diabetes medications and then they'd blame the nurses. If he's not on meds, they can sleep deprive him and brainwash him into a suicide and nobody will know what really happened. He's on their bad side and he was in M-Pod (Medical), so expect a possible VERY insane story to come from this guy. Not until his case is over with though, and not until he's released from jail or prison, whatever the case.

I know a lot of correctional officers and yes some of the ERT's can be rough when they have to be and some might be jerks. But, they don't just beat you up for taking a "piss." Think about it, everyone would be coming out of jail beat unless you can hold your "piss" for days, months, and years in some cases....
Also, why isn't it being said what Jenkins did to the officers.....I'm sure he was being a good boy, minding his own business....

Yes, but white inmates too. Trust me. If you know of any personal stories, stories from others, especially if there's proof or people at least willing to talk, please talk to me. If enough people put their heads together and take action, it could result in criminal charges against some of them. Nobody steps up like they should though. When inmates want to step up to get less time by snitching on guards or just want to do the right thing, they are threatened with beatings, death, no medications, no food, no phone calls or showers, and being poisoned. I know, I've been in there more than once or twice.

Watch for a Sergeant Martin that looks like Porky Pig. His first name is Roy. He often comes into a "POD" with a video camera when they take someone from the "POD" to Segregation or "the hole". Sgt. Martin may hold the video camera or ask the on duty guard in the POD too. They're supposed to keep it going the entire time. Sergeant Martin uses his fingers that he holds up to count down as he walks out of the POD and he's behind the inmate. The guard holding the camera isn't supposed to start filming until the finger countdown stops. They do this so they can beat inmates, and they do it by a corner of the guard's desk that they know is out of camera range so they won't be seen. The inmate that's being taken away doesn't see this, so he never knows what happened behind his back. There will be missing video footage from the same type of points in time during cell extractions/transports, and in the same exact places.
Just wait until you hear stories that will be coming out of M-POD.

Inmates talk, and in case you didn't notice, sound carries so much in there that you can hear guards at their desk even if they're being really quiet. They are very bold and leave many footprints.
