Why the Caterpillar Strike is Important

There are many reasons to support the Caterpillar workers who are fighting to keep previously won benefits and a middleclass standard of living.

For one, Caterpillar is a very profitable and financially stabled company. It reported second-quarter profits of $1.7 billion, up 67 percent from a year earlier; a year in which Caterpillar earned $4.7 billion in profits. It ranks in the top tier of heavy machine manufacturing in the world. There is no financial or economic imperative for Caterpillar to freeze raises for twelve years in a row at the same time forcing workers to contribute more for health insurance and agree to seniority changes to their contract.

Secondly Caterpillar instituted a two-tier wage system in the previous six-year contract which applies to all new hires  Some employees will be starting as low as $12 per hour which comes to $24,960 per annum. The poverty threshold for a family of four is $23,050. After income taxes and FICA are deducted a worker with a family of four would actually fall below the poverty threshold and could be eligible for Government assistance programs such as Food Stamps. When that happens we taxpayers are subsidizing the employees of a very profitable company.

Also, with wages frozen and with new workers replacing senior workers as they retire the Channahon plant will eventually be manned by workers whose average wage is slightly over the poverty line for a family of four, the kind of jobs which were once solid middleclass manufacturing jobs.

With consumer spending accounting for 60% to 70% of GDP the continuing assault on the middle class is not only devastating to the individual, but also to the economy on a national and local level. Every dollar earned but denied to a worker is one less dollar that gets back into the economy. It is one less dollar the worker has with which to buy a new car or flat screen TV, or to pay for his children’s education and more and more frequently one less dollar to feed his family. That dollar denied the worker does nothing to help the economy if it sits in the coffers of corporations who currently hold over two trillion dollars in cash.

This strike is not only about the workers at Caterpillar; it is also about what is happening to the middleclass in the country. They deserve our support.

A food drive to support Caterpillar workers will be held on Saturday, August 11 between 10am and 3pm in the parking lot of the Universalist Unitarian Church at 3401 W. Jefferson St. in Joliet, IL.

Food may also be dropped off for the duration of the strike Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 4:30pm at Teamsters Local 710, 9000 W. 187th St. Mokena, Il.

The food drive is sponsored by Friends of Cat Workers, South Suburban MoveOn Council, Universalist Unitarian Church and Teamsters Local 701.

I think the real damage belongs to the do nothing republican house and the filibustering republicans in the senate that block Obama from helping the middle class every step of the way.

Tom,record number of filibusters by republicans can't be denied.Mitch McConnell said that his number 1 priority was to defeat Obama. Not the economy ,not end war in the middle East, not healthcare but party power over the good of the nation.True compromise is not allowed by the tea party right. They have consistently campaigned against any of their own that would reach out to compromise with the other side causing obstruction instead of cooperation to solve our countries problems like unemployment.E.G.rebuilding infrastructure was always supported by both parties for jobs and the good of the country but, has been stonewalled by the republicans because employment would drop and make Obama look good.

They ought to be thrown out of this great country. I cant wait untill they are all gone in Nov. Im sick of progressives jamming their ideas and opinions down my throat.Im sick of the lazy people, Im sick of watching the real news and hearing how many more people are in the Gov. Dole. The unions have been dictating and getting away with too much for too long. The cry babies ought to be happy they have a job, shut up and work. You don't liike your job, leave and find another career or go to school. It is not the buiness owners fault that some workers are entry level education. What wroung with 12.50 an hr. for an entry level. That is more generous than min wage. The more education you have the more money you in most cases make. Unions and Government are the problem in this country. I am also not happy with the republicans. There is plenty of blame here. But this administration scares me the most and I want every last of them gone. This whole country will never be the same

I do like my job, or at least I did until Cat started taking away all the things I have worked the last 17 years for! I was happy to have a job, and now I am standing on a picket line. Why? Because what Cat is trying to do to us us WRONG! I don't care what your political affiliations are, how many of you would work for 6 years without a raise, especially knowing your health care costs are increasing by more than 2 1/2 times over the next 6 years? Newer people only "market-based" raises, may not get anything no matter how hard they work. Then they want to be able to loan us out to any shift, any job, for as long as they want for any reason, even if it's to give the day shift job I've worked for 17 years for to the boss's new hire nephew! Is that fair? Cat has had record profits for the last 2 1/2 years, CEO got 42% increase last year, & I get NOTHING? In effect a pay cut, now they are freezing my pension, have to contribute more to my 401k to be able to retire someday. Bonuses eliminated, pay frozen, costs going up. Pay CUT!

Unions didn't ruin this country. They gave us the 40 hour work week ,overtime pay, vacations, benefits and a safe workplace.Today they give people a voice against corporate greed and everything mentioned above.Unions are a democratic organization with elected officials that are directly accountable to their membership.Nowadays they give back as much as they get from companies so that they all can keep their jobs.

Others are sponsoring a food drive for the workers on strike at Caterpillar. Many have children, they need school supplies, food, diapers, etc. Strikers are receiving only a small check weekly from the union for strike pay, not nearly enough to pay bills, buy food, gas etc. Many have found other jobs, some will not go back to Cat when this is over. Strikers are not eligible for unemployment or government assistance.

As we enter the 15th week, here is the communication for August 7, 2012.

Ø It has been a great start to the week. We had two special visitors. Yesterday, United States Senator and majority whip Dick Durbin stopped on the line to show his support and to urge the company to resume talks. Today, the SEIU (Service Employees International Union) stopped by to show their support and to make a $25,000 donation to our food pantry. A HUGE thank you goes out to both for their efforts to support our members and families! These actions show that we are not alone.
Ø Thank you to UAW local 719 who brought more supplies to our food pantry this week!

There was a day long ago where Caterpillar was a great company. They took care of their people. They had great medical for their employees. It was a company that anchored this area and community with blue collar as well as white collar jobs. You could buy stock - you could raise a family - you were able to survive - feed your family - put them through school - go on a vacation - pay your bills - pay your taxes - you had a retirement. We have seen - and will continue to see - Greed. The companies, the boards and the CEO's of corporations who continue to see such massive profits - while taking away from the people who helped them build their huge companies - so for a select few - more profits - more bonuses - more stock options ? My heart goes out the the people of Caterpillar on strike. I have been there - my husband retired 7 yrs ago after 37 years with the company, his retirement pension now goes to pay our Caterpillar insurance premiums that continue to increase - we are thankful to have insurance - but we have seen and felt the decline of a great company. There is a culture of greed that has become the norm in this country. The culture of any company or country starts at the top - with the leaders - So who is leading and where are they leading to? At the end of the day - what makes a great company - profits or people? Why can't you have both.. unless greed is involved. Step forward you leaders, let's see what you got, get Cat employees back to work.

Caterpillar had a 22% revenue drop and a quarterly loss as recently as 2009. It appears they are signing six year long labor contracts. Do any of you know what the world economy will look like in six or seven years? Companies can't give fat contracts in good years and then be stuck with them in lean years -- that's what bankrupted GM and Chrysler. All the manufacturing growth in the US the last 15 years has been in "right to work" states where union membership is not required. The forces against US unions are not political, they are economic: Companies simply cannot afford to pay high salaries and full benefits to unskilled labor in the US. if they do, they will get their clocks cleaned by competitors who can pay workers less (whether in the third world or in non union US factories). We could do that in the 50s and 60s because WWII destroyed our competitors factories and so we were the world's manufacturer. Now the Germans make our high quality stuff (at a similar cost to us) and the Chinese make everything else(for much less) If you are an uneducated worker bee, the fact that you were born in America does not magically give you the "right" to earn more than a Chines factory worker who can do the exact same job.

And the German Caterpillar workers got raises in their last contract. And our skills are what gives Cat the reputation for top quality that has made them #1 in the world. As they hire less skilled labor, scrap goes up, quality goes down. If they want to compete with everybody else, fine. If they want to stay ahead of the pack, continue to be the best, then they need to keep & hire the best people! And guess what, you get what you pay for!!!

You can spend time on internet message boards complaining about corporate profits, or you can get some education and start directing some of those profits to your family. You can't control the world economy or the political process. You CAN control your own employability in the 21st century economy. Don't kill the messenger: you are longing for a way of life that is OVER: get a degree or a skilled trade, or you will be consigned to a third world standard of living no matter where you were born.

He hasn't been hit that hard yet.... there are millions of small business owners whose credit lines were pulled by the banks for no reason and they were put out of business. This was done so the banksters who robbed us could rekapitalize with OUR CAPITAL. My brother lost his livelihood as a union bricklayer. He now works at Jewel for minimum wage. He was evicted from his townhouse with out a day in court. My brother in law lost his
livelihood of over 20 years at a scaffolding co. He now works at Sears for spit. He

Do you not pay any bills? Every utility, service and commodity has risen in price. The only thing that has gone down is my property value. Soon they will raise the multiplier again to make up for lost taxes. If you own stock, in January your capital gains and dividends taxes will go up quite a bit. I have a funny habit of wanting to keep most of the money we make. You know, to feed, clothe and educate my kids and save for our retirement. Bob, I'm no fan of the GOP either. I am a Conservative and the closest I can get to a real one is in the Republican party. I put blame and anger where it belongs: with the people responsible: Liberals and the RINOs, if you look at a chart of presidential progress since Eisenhower, you'll see that job growth for Obama is .01%. Unemployment is over 8% for the last 40 months. Everything costs more. My problem now is that the current occupant of the White House is so terribly socialist that now we're begging for any Republican. Ron Paul doesn't have a chance, but his Constitutional ideas resonate with people. We need to stop spending so much money (which we don't have) and let businesses recover. They won't hire or spend because they don't know what Obama will do next. There's no confidence.

Chronicles of Bob......The repeal of Glass-Steagall wasn't the only protection they removed to rob US....But it allowed Wall Street to use the illusion of SECURITIZATION....to oversell interests in ANYTHING WITH A REVENUE FLOW......EVEN THINGS WITHOUT A MONEY FLOW...CNBC reported a while back that the year Glass Steagall was repealed.....WALL STREET MADE 60 TRILLION DOLLARS SELLING DERIVATIVES....The Commodities and Exchange Act was severely weakened......BY CONgress ....The Patriot Act allowed the banks to transfer our wealth overseas with ease. The UPTICK RULE was removed by the SEC....IN 2007...That allowed the Stock Market crash to occur by INSIDER TRADING......CNBC REPORTED THE STOCK MARKET CRASH HAPPENED BECAUSE OF INSIDER TRADING....SEE THE YOU TUBE VIDEO ENTITLED ....CNBC SAYS THE ILLUMINATI CRASHED THE STOCK MARKET........WE WERE SET UP.....SLOWLY AND STRATEGICALLY..DON'T FORGET CLINTON ALSO SIGNED THE NAFTA AGREEMENT. None of this fraud could have been possible without the traitors from within. See the Academy Award winning documentary INSIDE JOB by CHARLES FERGUSON.

I would take the Eisenhower Republican party in a heartbeat over the republican party we are left with today.

yes, the beginning of the catastrophe we experienced starting in the Bush years, that the repeal of Glass Steagel act guaranteed.

100% right russ... But it made small % very rich, and continues to do so... yet we would rather sling rocks at those trying to keep their benefits of a job... We would rather praise Gov Walker who takes rights away from workers and unions.. Those very same Unions that help make private businesses like Christines or Moms successful... They just don't see the foundation that these people laid for them... Easy to use the word GOD then spit on people

How about a Theodore Roosevelt Republican? Someone who is not afraid to break up the Corporate Oligarchy. Someone who has enough guts to break up this unlawful, giant multinational monopoly.

Gov. Pat Quinn gave a $10,000 donation from his “Taxpayers for Quinn” campaign fund to the Machinists’ strike fund. He should have used his personal funds.

Look, neither party can hold their head up, look the American public in the eye, and tell us that they've put the country first, and done a good job. But politicians are like underwear - they need to be changed on a regular basis. Give a new administration a chance to get us working again. Four more years of the same, and expecting a diferent result? That's what they call insanity.

Need to change the rules... They are set up to favor a very few. That isnt by accident. A simple example is the NCAA, where I have plenty of exp... The rules are set up by the big boys to favor the big boys...

Bob, I'm so tired of hearing people who feel so sorry for themselves. Whine and cry all you want, but try putting all that enery into improving yourself: get a degree, get more experience, get better skills. Make your own way instead of crying for a company to give it to you. I'd be embarrassed to say I couldn't get ahead on my own merit.

I have spent the last 17 years at Cat doing exactly what you suggest Christine, improving my skills, taking classes, getting experience, working hard at making myself a better employee and a better asset to Cat. I have gotten ahead on my own merit. Yes we have a union. But if you can't do the job you are assigned to you are either demoted to something you can handle or fired. My union is there to protect me against favoritism and personal vendettas, and to make sure Cat fulfills the terms of their contract. Under this proposal from Cat my union will no longer have the authority to protect me from the above items. This is NOT just about money. Cat wants to break this union, they want to be able to pay whatever, do whatever, and yet still expect to be #1 in the industry. I want what is best for Cat as well as for its employees. If Cat is going to stay the best they need the best people. You don't get the best people by paying minimum wage & not offering benefits. You get the best people by being the top employer with the best pay & benefits. If they get their way Joliet will become a training facility, where people will come to learn the jobs & then take their skills elsewhere. This is bad for us, for Joliet, & for Caterpillar!

Ivent, if our livlihood disappears we'd have to find a new one. We're also incredibly frugal so we can live on quite little. But, it's probably genetic. My Grandma never graduated high school, had a baby at 16 and worked in a factory doing piece work her entire adult life until she retired at 65. She bought and paid in full TWO houses in seven years each. They worked their butts off and it paid off. They didn't sit around complaining. They WORKED.

Where in my post is it about crying? I spoke about making a difference and changing the rules. However You need to learn how to read and take your own advice about where to put your energy.
Amazing what learning a little history will do for you. You might actually go after the actual problem. Not what the fox machine tells you it is...
