What Should Go Here? The Former Jewel-Osco on Lincoln Highway

Plenty of Olympia Fields and Chicago Heights residents hated to see it go last summer. What should replace that grocery store?

When news dropped that the Jewel-Osco in Olympia Fields would be closing last August, people got upset.  The Village of Olympia Fields rallied to try to keep the store there. Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. even wrote a letter stating that the company should reverse its decision, to no avail. Since Jewel left, the strip mall it once inhabited has felt the impact and has lost some other businesses, including a Chinese buffet restaurant.  What do you think could revitalize this area? Another grocery? A fitness center? A South Suburban museum? Let us know what you would like to see replace Jewel-Osco at 2500 Lincoln Highway. Tell us in the comments!

Step 2: Video/Photo Gallery Look at Pool Construction

During the second phase of pool construction at the Hufnagl residence in New Lenox, the pool base is going down—85-100 bags of Pool-Krete—in preparation for the liner to be installed on top by the Aqua Pools team.

Andy Hufnagl and his wife, Angela, decided to put a 20x44 in-ground pool in their back yard, in part so their daughter, Autumn, could train and play with her friends. Autumn is a member of the Lincoln-Way Gators swim team. The Hufnagls live in New Lenox. During the second phase of construction, the Aqua Pools team spent a day putting the pool base down in preparation for the liner to be installed on top. The job of troweling—spreading 85-100 bags of Pool-Krete—fell on the shoulders of Tom Eiler. He said he has worked on more than 1,400 pool projects since Aqua Pools opened for business in 1978. Jim Eiler Jr. serves as vice president and chief salesman for the family-run business, which operates throughout the Southland. "After the liner is…

Chicago Heights Pita Pan Employees Sue Over $118 Million Lottery Ticket

The employees claim they were excluded from the winnings despite contributing to the purchase of the ticket.

Two employees of Pita Pan in Chicago Heights are suing their coworkers less than two weeks after a group of eleven won the $118 million Mega Millions jackpot. Jose Franco and Marco Medina were regularly part of a lottery pool with co-workers at the bakery for about a year, with the group collecting money every Monday and Thursday for Mega Millions drawings, according to Chicago Tribune. On May 1 the group won $9 from a ticket Franco and Medina helped pay for. The two opted to allow the money to be spent on another ticket for the May 4 drawing. This was the ticket that won, according to the lawsuit. Franco and Medina were allegedly excluded from the winnings because they did not contribute additional money for the ticket as their eleven …

The question is was the winning ticket bought with the rollover winnings or was it bought from the additional money collected? I used to run a lottery pool in my office the rollover money and tickets were kept separate from the new pool and the lists of names of participants were kept with the tickets.   more ›

Unless you're in the habit of eating CFLs by the truckload, there's not enough Hg in them to make any difference to your health from routine exposure to an occassional broken bulb.   more ›

Switch Off: Incandescent Bulbs Soon Will Burn Out for Good

As a result of U.S. government energy-efficiency standards, traditional incandescent light bulbs are being phased out. Local electrical contractor Tom Sullivan says consumers need to be educated so they can make the right choices moving forward.

Don’t be surprised if some of those old jokes about how many blankety-blanks it takes to change a light bulb bounce back into the comedic mainstream of life. No kidding. The job is not as easy as it used to be, not anymore. “The consumer needs to be educated on what it is they are buying and to find out if the new apples they are buying are equal to the old oranges they used to buy,” said Tom Sullivan of Sullivan Electrical Contractors and Epic Lighting Solutions in Oak Forest. “Because you can’t get the old oranges any more.” Sullivan’s comments come in direct response to energy-savings measures being implemented by the U.S. government. As a result of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, traditional incandescent light bulbs …
