Flossmoor Family Says Jerky Treats Killed Dog

What happened to 6-year-old Candy? The silky terrier's owners are convinced treats killed their furry family member.

A Flossmoor family is grieving the loss of a beloved family pet, who they say died from ingesting questionable jerky treats.

Barry and Jasmine Johnson told ABC7 their 6-year-old silky terrier Candy was her lively self, until about a week after they had been feeding her Waggin Train Chicken Jerky Tenders. Their healthy Candy took a strange turn, they said, sick with lethargy and frequent urination.

Then last week, their hearts broke as the dog's eyes began to glaze over, and "next thing you know, she's gone," Jasmine Johnson told ABC7.

The vet was unable to determine a cause of death.

The Johnson family's case is one of 5,000 related to the treats, with owners reporting dogs' stomach and kidney issues to the Food and Drug Administration. Roughly 1,000 dogs have died from their symptoms, according to the report.

The agency has not determined a cause of the illness, and the treats are currently under investigation.

But the Johnson family is confident the treats contributed to their Candy's untimely passing.

"A 6-year-old healthy, vibrant dog ... just doesn't die," Barry Johnson told the reporter.
