Honoring the Red and Blue of the Heights: Viewfinder

Police and firefighters in Chicago Heights were given special recognition May 15 for all their hard work.

On a cold and rainy Sunday, warmth and appreciation flowed through . Several Chicago Heights police officers and firefighters were honored during an annual tribute to thank those who protect the city of Chicago Heights.

A prayer for the servants was given to open up the program:

Blessed are you, Lord, God of mercy, who through your Son gave us a marvelous example of charity and the great commandment of love for one another.

Send down your blessings on these your servants, who generously devote themselves to helping others and protect them always as they work to protect us all.

Grant them courage when they are afraid, wisdom when they make quick decisions, strength when they are weary and compassion in all their work. When the alarm sounds and they are called to aid both friend and stranger, let them faithfully serve you in their neighbor. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Chicago Miracle Temple member Rebecca Harris read Psalm 23 as other members sat near the police officers and firefighters.

The Rev. Lawrence Blackful reminded the police officers and firefighters they have a divine calling to family and community, then told a story about a former classmate who is now a Chicago Heights firefighter he pushed forward in his training to serve the people of Chicago Heights.

Daughters of the Rev. William P. Anderson, Carlisa and Crysy, joined other church members in an a cappella rendition of  “We Need You” which brought tears to a few community members.

After the program, members of Chicago Miracle Temple Church served dinner to all the guests.
