Local Kids Raise Over $300 For Abandoned Animals

"… It's just plain awesome," says one sixth-grader. He and his classmates built a new organization to help out local animal shelter South Suburban Humane Society.

A group of third- through sixth-grade kids at Mohawk Intermediate Center recently transformed an in-class lesson into real world success, according to a report from the Sun-Times Media.

After learning about endangered species, the kids became concerned with local abandoned animals. So they decided to do something about it. The result is Saving Animals for Everyone (S.A.F.E.)—an organization they developed. It's dedicated to raising funds for Chicago Heights shelter South Suburban Humane Society (SSHS). So far, they've already collected pet food for donation and raised $316.13 for SSHS.

“I feel it’s amazing to give back to my town and all animals everywhere," sixth-grader Jose Lopez told the Sun-Times Media. "I helped the best I could and in the end it worked out.”
