More than 30 dogs will have a second chance at happy lives, after local animal shelters rescued them from a puppy mill in Ohio.

P.A.W.S Tinley Park and South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights took in the 37 dogs, all of which are between the ages of 8 and 10 years old. The dogs were removed from "horrific and deplorable" conditions at the facility.

Volunteers rose to the occasion, pitching in with compassion however possible. Some drove the vans, some helped move the canines to safety. But it didn't take much coaxing, according to the P.A.W.S Tinley Park Facebook page.

"All these pups knew they were going to a better place," staff wrote on the page. "As we were taking them out of the cages they were wagging their tails and some seemed to be smiling."

P.A.W.S. reached out to South Suburban Humane Society, who gladly welcomed six of the rescues into its shelter.

"Staff and volunteers have been working all day to shave their horribly matted fur, vaccinate, heartworm test, bathe, and make them as comfortable as possible," staff wrote on South Suburban Humane Society's Facebook page. "The 6 we have taken are definitely ones that were used over and over again for breeding."

P.A.W.S. staff reassured Facebook fans that the dogs are being carefully tended to and will be ready for a fresh start soon.

"As bad as these poor babies look, they will be different dogs in just a matter of hours," P.A.W.S. staff wrote on the Facebook page.

"We can't wait for them to have a fresh start at life and know only love and compassion," South Suburban Humane Society staff wrote.
