On Mitt Romney, Barack Obama and Zarlengo's: Facebook Feedback

The Facebook crowd had plenty to say about the president and the governor this past week. They also had a pretty neat suggestion for the coolest place in the Heights.

President Barack Obama and Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney went head-to-head in their second debate last week, and as usual there were plenty of utterances of "that's not true" and "good question."

I decided to post a couple of quotes from the debate as it was in progress, the first being from Romney:

"Trade. I'm gonna crack down on China. President Bush didn't."

Monica SanMiguel responded, "Obama rightly points out that Romney is MUCH more conservative than George W. Bush ever was, especially on social issues. On economic issues, Bush and Romney are on par in hurting the middle class."

Then I posted the following quote from Obama:

"Governor, you're the last person that's going to crack down on China."

The first comment was from Jared Pryszcz, who disagreed with my choice of quotes. "I really don't think any newspaper or media industry should post quotes like this because if you look at it the Romney quote you posted is not as hard based as the Obama quote," Pryszcz said. "Neutrality in media is needed. Just a point."

There were also several responses from one of our more active Facebook friends, Michael Bowman, including the following gem:

"It's a conversation starter indeed. How can he say that he is against or going to "crack down" on China but is invested in products that they are making, which are making him money. THAT'S KIND OF DOUBLE TALK ISN'T IT?"

Later in the evening I decided to ask the always-fitting question: Who's winning so far? Check out some of the responses:

  • Cathy Cada: Obama=Winning!!
  • Heidi Hawkins Gardiner: Mitt!
  • Rosalie Ramirez: Tie, but Obama hit on critical topics.
  • Jared Pryszcz: Tie. Great debate from both candidates.
  • Liz Van Uitert Hernandez: The binder of women is winning

We Want More Zarlengo's

On Wednesday, I posted a link to an Editor's Notebook post about the gas tanks being removed from the old gas station next to Zarlengo's on Joe Orr Road. Finally seeing some activity in that area led me to ask what should happen with that land.

Elena Leal shared an interesting (and tasty) idea. "I think Zarlengo's should expand. Have indoor seating and they could be open all year."

Roz Leal-Espinosa agreed, stating, "All year round sounds so good to me!!! They are well established they would do well!"

Maybe Zarlengo's will consider the idea. For now, hurry up and get your cool treats because they close for the season Sunday!
