Power Struggles: After 4 Days in Dark, Residents' Power Restored

Following storms earlier in the week, some Chicago Heights residents were left without power for up to four days, as ComEd worked to fix downed lines, shorts and other electrical issues. As of June 27, ComEd said 99 percent of power was restored.

Heavy winds and rains knocked out the power of about 300,000 Chicagoland residents between Monday, June 24, and Thursday, June 27—including many homes in Chicago Heights, according to ComEd. As of Thursday morning, power was restored to 99 percent of those without, a ComEd spokesperson said.

“We do have a few remaining, scattered outages,” the spokesperson said. “Moreso in the south suburbs, where we may have single customers or customers that may have had more extensive damage.”

On ComEd’s website, an outage map shows the areas affected by the storms and other incidents that left homes without power. More than 50 Chicago Heights homes were listed as without power, as of noon on Thursday, June 27.

Of those homes, it is unknown how many were without power from the weather or from some other incident.

“All of those outages are conclusive of all of our outages, not just storm-related,” the spokesperson said.

The map indicated that crews are working in all of the areas near the homes to restore power. Some locations were estimated to have power back by 1:30 p.m. Thursday, while others were left unknown. The map updates every half-hour.
