Independence Day....

text book definition of Independence Day.

The goal of the American Revolution was liberty. The rebellion was perhaps the first, and certainly was the clearest, case of people altering a political order violently simply to protect their liberties. The French revolution in 1789 sought not only liberty but also "equality and fraternity"; The Russian revolution in 1917 and the Chinese revolution in 1949 chiefly sought equality and were little concerned with liberty.

What Americans sought to protect were the traditional liberties to which they thought they were entitled as British subjects. They included the right to bring a case before an independent judges rather than those subordinate to the king, to be free of the burden of having British troops quartered in their homes, to engage in trade without costly restrictions, and to pay no taxes levied by the British Parliament in which Americans had no direct representation.

Many Americans thought these liberties could be found while remaining part of Great Britain, but those who supported our Revolution were convinced that only independence would guarantee freedom. These people had lost confidence in British government and the unwritten constitution on which it was based. Their explanation for the inadequacy of British government was based on human nature (Miller 9).

The above text is taken from my favorite political science text book.

I think the text outlines very well the raw basis, for and why, any group of people need fair government. The text makes a sincere and strong point of what is the problem in government; the problem being human nature. The only way to overcome such a problem is to institute government that does not allow human nature to prevail.
