"Words & Numbers" at the Union Street Gallery

Union Street Gallery presents National Juried Exhibit “Words & Numbers” juried by prominent Chicago gallery owner Aron Packer, owner of the Packer Schopf Gallery in the west loop art district. Artists from all over the country will be flying to Chicago Heights to celebrate the opening of the exhibit March 4.

As our primary means of communication—language, in all its forms and nuances—ties us to one another yet creates boundaries between us, informs us as well as mystifies us, marks our places, our histories and our visions. “Words & Numbers” focuses on the visual signs and symbols of written language, offering artists the opportunity to explore letters, words and numbers that represent various functions and meanings, abstractions and emotions, thoughts and reactions. Incorporating glimpses of our written language in art, along with other elements of our visual vocabulary, leads to a broader voice for expression of ideas.

Packer did a profound job of choosing works that created a balance of contrast and accord. Of the over 250 entries submitted from all over the country, only 41 were chosen by the juror to exhibit. The exhibit features a number of complex and intricate works of art including several dynamic installations that engage the viewer. Art exhibited incorporates words, letters, punctuation and numbers somehow through subject matter, imagery, concept or design of the work. This includes abstracted and invented languages, graffiti, signs, symbols, statistics, geometry, grids, formulas, numerology, codes and computer languages. The compilation of works and their arrangement makes for a show that has a smart, city gallery feel while still remaining approachable.
