New Prairie State Exhibit Highlights Work of Women Artists

'Sapphire and Crystals,' a new art exhibit at the Christopher Art Gallery at Prairie State College, opened June 3. The exhibit will run through July 10, with an opening with the artists event on Thursday, June 6, at 4 p.m.

The Prairie State College Christopher Art Gallery is hosting a brand new exhibit from June 3 through July 10, featuring works by a collective of black women. The exhibit, which is called 'Sapphire and Crystals,' is currently open to the public.

"The individual personal work by each member addressing various themes such as race, gender, limited palettes, our pasts, etc., exemplifies the diversity within our ethnic group, one of the missions of the group," said Joyce Owens, the exhibit's curator, in a release.

The 13 artists featured in the exhibit are: Rose Blouin, Arlene Taylor Crawford, Felicia Grant-Preston, Juarez Hawkins, Patricia Stewart, Shirley Sullivan, Dorian Sylvain, Pearlie Taylor, Shahar Caren Weaver, Rhonda Wheatley, Shyvette Williams,  Renee Williams-Jefferson and Owens.

A special opening reception, with the artists, will be held Thursday, June 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the gallery.
