Canadian National to Pay For Most of Lincoln Highway Underpass

The company's purchase of a nearby railroad has come with a big price tag.

Canadian National Railway Co. will have to put $68 million toward two underpasses in the suburbs to ease up traffic jams that would likely occur as a result of the company's increased usage of the Elgin Joliet & Eastern railroad.

One of those underpasses will be in nearby Lynwood.

Crain's reported Tuesday the U.S. Appeals Court for the District of Columbia unanimously upheld conditions the Suburban Transportation Board put in place when it initially approved CN's $300 million purchase of EJ&E, which means the company will have to pay 78.5 percent of the costs in building an underpass at Lincoln Highway in Lynwood.
