National Weather Service Warns of Extreme Heat, Gives Tips on Keeping Cool

Chicago Heights offers the library as a primary cooling center during the heat,

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for north central Illinois, northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana Wednesday, with temperatures reaching the mid-90s. The combination of heat and humidity will result in higher heat index values near 100 degrees this afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, we should expect cooler conditions by Wednesday night and Thursday, as a cold front moves across the area. Thunderstorms are also possible late this afternoon, evening and overnight across northwest and north central Illinois with wind gusts higher than 60 miles per hour, possible quarter-size hail and heavy rainfall in excess of one inch. We can expect thunderstorms sporadically throughout the rest of the week. 

The National Weather Service and Village of Evergreen Park is reminding residents to take the following precautions in the extreme heat:

  • Stay hydrated, drink plenty of fluids
  • Stay in an air-conditioned room if possible, stay out of the sun, don't go outside unless you have to
  • Remember to check up on relatives and neighbors
  • Don't leave pets or children outside or in unattended vehicles

The , located at 25 West 15th Street, is a designated cooling location for anyone trying to get out of the heat. It's open hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The building, located at 1601 South Halsted Street, is also a place to cool off, but residents are encouraged to visit the library.
