Coming Soon: Time to Crunch Some Federal Government Numbers for the Heights

We've got stories with data from the IRS and U.S. Census Bureau coming soon.

So, I've been doing a little digging lately.

By digging I mean scouring spreadsheets of government data to see if any of it matters to the good people of Chicago Heights, Olympia Fields or South Chicago Heights.

It starts with the Internal Revenue Service. Fun, right?

In June, the IRS released some interesting information about nonprofit organizations that have had their tax-exempt status revoked due to not filing the proper paperwork for three years in a row.

There are quite a few local nonprofits on that list.

Friday morning I'll be posting the list of Chicago Heights, Olympia Fields and South Chicago Heights nonprofits that are on that list.

There is one caveat though.

Some, if not many, of these organizations don't exist anymore, and therefore have no need for tax-exempt status. My next step will be pulling the names of the still-operational nonprofits, and finding out if they are aware their tax-exempt status was revoked.

Keep an eye open for that.

Also, we'll be starting up a new series soon that collects census data for our area and looks at some of the more interesting statistics, such as race breakdowns, home vacancies and age averages in our towns. Some of the numbers are rather surprising.

So that's what's in the works. Thanks for stopping by Chicago Heights Patch!
