Prologue Schools Will Treat Children to Cheer and a Visit from Santa

Who: Bronzeville children and families

What: “Winter Wonderland” Holiday Celebration, hosted by Prologue Inc.

When:  Dec. 18, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.


Where: 3232 South King Drive, Chicago, Ill.

Why: To bring holiday cheer to Bronzeville children and adults

The Prologue, Inc. “Winter Wonderland” holiday celebration will feature Christmas carols by Terisa Griffin, a former contestant on “The Voice,” and her band, as well as a performance by Fel Davis, former lead singer for the group “Public Announcement,” now a solo artist. Cece Carter, a local spoken-word artist, will be the Christmas storyteller.


Children attending will have an opportunity to write letters to Santa and recite their wish lists to him as he sits on his throne in “Winter Wonderland.” Decorations will include a Christmas tree and Christmas-themed animatronics to complete the festive theme. All participants will get bags of candy, hot dogs, hot cider and popcorn. A play area will include bounce houses for older children and a train for younger children. Admission is free.

The following organizations will have informational tables:

  • Prologue, Inc., a network of alternative high schools

  • The Darren Group, a social-service organization that is a partner with Prologue and Nike on bringing basketball clinics to the area, including held over the Thanksgiving holiday and one scheduled for the holidays on Saturday, Dec. 28. (Site to be determined.)

  • Bronzeville Tourism, an organization promoting sightseeing in the Chicago neighborhood.

  • Blacks in Green, the Green Village Builders, an award-winning economic development organization based in West Woodlawn, Chicago.

  • Camp Douglas Restoration Foundation, an organization working to establish a memorial to the Civil War prison camps at Camp Douglas and to the contribution of African-Americans to the war. Part of the camp was at 32nd and S. King Drive where the Winter Wonderland is being held. Prologue operates a Civil War museum and has administrative offices there in the building that formerly housed the Griffin Funeral Home.

  • In addition, Jemima Kareen will host a Kwaanza booth

    Prologue has four alternative high schools – W.E.B. Dubois Prologue Early College Education High School at 1135 N. Cleaver; Charles H. Houston Alternative Charter High School at 7847 S. Jeffrey Blvd.; Joshua Johnston Fine Art and Design Charter School at 1551 W. 95th Street and Winnie Mandela Intergenerational Alternative High School at 7847 S. Jeffrey, and several social-service programs scattered throughout the city. Prologue recently announced plans for another school, a maritime academy that will open next fall.


    Founded in 1973, Prologue is a nonprofit organization serving Chicago communities for 40 years. Prologue provides community services and administers educational and job-training programs for young people, ages 17 to 24, who want to earn a diploma, but who find traditional learning environments challenging. Enrollment is voluntary, and the graduation rate at Prologue’s high schools in Chicago is 75 percent.
