Photo Gallery: Hundreds Pay Tribute at Veterans Mound
The annual Memorial Day service at Veterans Mound brings out veterans, residents and elected officials as they remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service.
Looking over Lincoln Highway and Chicago Road, a few hundred residents stood to remember those who sacrificed their lives during military service.
Mayor David Gonzales and others honored those who died serving our country before placing a new wreath at Veterans Mound Monday.
Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. was the keynote speaker. He spoke about the first Memorial Day and how African Americans were a large part of that history, initially referred to as "Decoration Day." Various American Legion Posts and VFW Posts gave a donation to the Manteno Veterans Home in place of flowers.

Hundreds of hands were placed on hearts as taps was played toward the end of the program. A few tears were shed as attendees remember the soldiers who believed we were all worth fighting for.
It draws Chicago Heights residents back every year to honor those who died.
