Three Local Events Celebrating Martin Luther King Day

Take a look at three events going on in the Chicago Heights area honoring a powerful figure in U.S. history.

He may have been taken from us more than 40 years ago, but Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s impact continues to resonate in 2012. In celebration of the national holiday Chicago Heights Patch would like to highlight a few events going on near you today.

When: 10:30 a.m.

What: Mayor David A. Gonzalez and the City Council, Clerk Lori Wilcox and Bloom High School cordially invite you to the City’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration.

Please join as they pay tribute to Dr. King’s legacy and the remarkable changes he made during the Civil Rights Movement for our great country.

Featured guests include Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, State Sen. Toi Hutchinson, the Bloom High School Choir and more.

When: 9 a.m.

Where: Southstar Services, 1005 W End Ave, Chicago Heights

What: Habitat for Humanity Chicago South Suburbs employees, along with AmeriCorps workers and several other volunteers, will give a fresh coat of paint to the facility that has been providing programs and services to individuals with developmental disabilities for over 60 years.  

Currently SouthSTAR Services owns 5 living facilities in the Chicago South Suburban areas and service over 400 individuals in Illinois and Indiana through their programs and services.

Get in the spirit of MLK Day and and help Habitat freshen up a unifying organization in Chicago Heights.

When: 6 a.m.

Where: , 20712 Western Ave., Olympia Fields

What: Honoring the past while celebrating the future. The Olympia Fields Park District invites you to join them again for their annual special program remembering Dr. Martin Luther King.
