Chicago Heights Firefighter Hospitalized After Morning Fire

The firefighters had to extinguish the abandoned building for the second time this month.

A was sent to St. James Hospital with shortness of breath during a Thursday morning blaze, according to Asst. Fire Chief James Angell.

The fire, located at 1235 Vincennes Ave., was called in at 3:23 a.m. and firefighters didn't leave the scene for another two hours.

"This was the second fire at the house this month," Angell said. "Upon arrival the first and second floor rear were fully engulfed . . . It was surprisingly hot and humid there this morning."

After the area was secured, the department was updated on the condition of the firefighter, who is being treated and monitored at the hospital.

"He's in good spirits," said Angell.

The house was abandoned and there were no other injuries. The cause of the fire is still undetermined.
