Chicago Heights Man Charged with Stealing Vehicle After Sunday Carjacking

Cory D. Williams, 24, of the 1400 block of Edgewood in Chicago Heights, was arrested and charged after police said he stole a car and crashed it about a block away from the incident.

A Chicago Heights man was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle Sunday night after carjacking a vehicle left unlocked and running with a 14-year-old inside.

Cory D. Williams, 24, of the 1400 block of Edgewood in Chicago Heights, was arrested after he crashed the vehicle and ran from the scene, Glen Ellyn Police Deputy Chief Bill Holmer said.

A man left his vehicle running while he went inside a convenience store at 1184 Roosevelt Road around 5 p.m. Williams told the child left inside the vehicle to get out and proceeded to drive west on Roosevelt Road, Holmer said in a news release.

Williams drove the car westbound but one block away, he struck another vehicle at Roosevelt Road and Briar Street, police said. He was unable to turn northbound and hit a street sign and then fled the vehicle on foot.

An officer near the scene of the incident saw Williams running and began to pursue him, but he disappeared into an apartment complex. Officers along with officers and a canine unit from the Villa Park Police Department searched the complex and arrested Williams, Holmer said.

Williams was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, no valid driver’s license, leaving the scene of an accident and two counts of failure to give information after striking property.

He is currently being held in DuPage County Jail on $20,000 bond, according to the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.
