Police Blotter: New Pastor Looking to Steal Parishioners, Student-Security Fight

Knife Pulled on Clerk

Cortez Tarver, 36, of the 7500 block of Hoffman Street in Munster, IN, was charged with aggravated assault. Police said Tarver entered a liquor store in the 200 block of 14th Street where he was not welcome and pulled a knife and threatened to cut the clerk. Police arrested Tarver outside the liquor store around 10 p.m. and found a black folding knife in his pocket, according to the report.

Holy Word War

Police said a Chicago Heights woman may be responsible for letters goading the parishioners of a church in the 0-100 block of 16th Street to join a new congregation on the allegation that their current one is closing down. One member of the church reported receiving mail from the same woman advertising the opening of her new church.

Crack Pipe

Ronald Conner, 49, of the 1200 block of Wentworth Avenue in Chicago Heights, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said they were patrolling the 1500 block of Shields Avenue around 2 p.m. when they saw Conner standing on abandoned property. A protective patdown revealed two pipes used for smoking crack cocaine, police said.

Student-Security Fight

Quarkisha L. Evans, 18, of the 300 block of 15th Street in Chicago Heights, was charged with battery. A security officer at Bloom High School told police that Evans slapped him in the face with an open hand following an argument during school dismissal. She was arrested and booked at the police station, police said.

Stolen Firearm, More

Two homes were burglarized in the 100 block of Mildred Lane sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., police said, one of which was missing a 32-caliber semi-automatic blue steel handgun with brown handle. From the other, a red snow blower was allegedly taken from the garage.
