Eight Chicago Heights police department members were honored by the Chicago Police Department during the April Commendation Ceremony for their work in helping locate and apprehend a dangerous individual early this year. The eight officers worked with the Chicago police to help locate the suspect, a known gang member, after the suspect committed a car jacking on the Dan Ryan Expressway.

Officers Warner Biedenharn, Michael Johnson, David Long, Robert Wald, detectives John Gipson, Ryan Meder, Lieutenant Ronald Simonetti and retired Sergeant Bryan Howard, each received a commendation from the Chicago Police Department for their work.

The Chicago Heights police staff became involved with the investigation after State Police reported the car jacking to the Chicago police. The Chicago police were investigating a seemly unrelated incident, when the offender shot one an officer and fled the scene. Through the investigation, police determined the offender was known to frequent the Chicago Heights area, which brought the Chicago Heights police into the investigation, according to a release.
