Update: South Chicago Heights Man Charged with Murdering 4-month-old Daughter

Police say Sophia Ortiz was in the care of her father when she sustained fatal injuries.

Jonathan Ortiz, 23, was charged with murder Friday evening after his 4-month-old daughter Sophia Ortiz died Tuesday night, according to police.

The girl was in Ortiz's care when she sustained multiple injuries, police told WGN Radio. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office determined the injuries and child abuse to be the cause of death, calling it a homicide.

Police initially responded to a call early Monday morning about an unresponsive baby in the 100 block of West 31st Street. The baby appeared to have been shaken, South Chicago Heights Police Chief William Joyce told Sun-Times media.
