Homeless Woman Arrested After 16-Hour Standoff with Police

Police were called at 11 a.m. Friday and remained in a standoff with the woman until 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

Olympia Fields police arrested a homeless woman after she was threatened a relative at gunpoint Friday, Sun-Times Media reports.  

The incident occurred in a home in the 3200 block of London Drive in Olympia Fields, police told reporter Casey Toner. A family member told police the 55-year-old woman was complaining about "excessive noise" as she brandished the gun, according to Cook County sheriff’s police spokesman Frank Bilecki. The same family member told police the woman had a history of "mental illness and violent behavior," Bilecki added.

The Cook County Sheriff’s hostage, barricade and terrorist team, we're called to the scene as well, and negotiators spoke to the woman for more than 12 hours. Police finally used a robot to determine the basement was empty and had a tactical team enter. Police found the woman sleeping in a bedroom. She awakened and was subdued with a stun gun before being taken into custody.

The woman is being held without charges until a psychological evaluation is complete, according to police detective Mark Akiyama.
