Police Blotter: Man Safe After Gun Fails To Fire

MONDAY, DEC. 19

Saved By Gun Malfunction

A Chicago Heights man told police he was menaced by a man with a gun, but escaped when the weapon failed to discharge. The man said he was approached outside his apartment building by a man known only as “Cornell,” who brandished a shotgun, according to reports. The man attempted to fire, but the gun did not work and the resident fled to safety, police said.

Penny Fight Leads To Assault Charges

A Chicago Heights man was charged with assault after arguing over pennies with an employee at an area liquor store, police said. Corey L. Young, 41, of the 400 block of West 16th Street, was ejected from Unlimited Food and Liquor after the argument, reports said. Young then returned to the business at 432 W. 14th St. and threatened that employee, who then called police, according to officers. Young is scheduled to appear in Markham Court Feb. 17, 2012 at 1 p.m. in Room 205.

Drinks Stolen Beer, Breaks Door When Asked To Pay

A Chicago Heights man ran afoul of the law after police said he stole a beer from an area business, drank it outside, then angrily punched the door until it broke when asked for payment. Ricky L. Stevenson, 42, of the 1300 block of Wentworth Avenue, is charged with retail theft and criminal damage to property. An employee at Ricky’s Market, 275 E. 16th St., told police that Stevenson took a 22-ounce bottle of Cold Steele Reserve beer from the store and drank it outside. When the clerk demanded payment, police said Stevenson kicked and punched the door. Stevenson is set to appear in Markham Court at 9 a.m. Jan. 23 in Room 205.

Honest Resident Returns Bike

A Chicago Heights woman contacted police after she discovered a mountain bike in her front bushes, police said. The bike is described as a Murray-brand mountain bike, and was tagged by police as recovered property. Anyone who believes this is their bicycle should contact Chicago Heights Police Department at (708) 756-6400.

WEDNESDAY, DEC. 14

Domestic Battery Charges

A Chicago Heights man was charged with domestic battery after police said he hit and choked his girlfriend. Desmond White, 44, of the 1200 block of Mason Court, became angry when his girlfriend said she wanted to leave, according to reports.
