Ice Cream Seller in Stable Condition After Being Shot on Halsted Street

After being lured by three men, the vendor was shot in the abdominal area.

A 39-year-old Chicago man is hospitalized after being shot while selling ice cream out of a cart near the intersection of 12th and Halsted streets. 

Just after 9 p.m. on May 14, found Antonio Gomez lying on the ground, with a gunshot wound to his abdomen, in the first block of East 12th Street.

Gomez told police he was walking up Halsted Street, pushing his cart and selling ice cream when three men called out to him.

The vendor told police he thought the men wanted to buy ice cream, so he walked over to them. One of the men asked for ice cream. When Gomez opened the lid of his cart, one of the men pulled out a handgun, demanding Gomez hand over his money.

Gomez told the man he did not have any money. That's when the man shot him at least twice in his abdominal area, according to police.

The  rendered aid to Gomez before transporting him to St. James Hospital. Gomez was then air-lifted to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn for further treatment. 

Gomez is in stable condition. Police are still investigating the shooting.
