A nationwide manhunt for a Rockford, IL, suspected of killing two people ended with a high-speed chase through northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, reports the Rockford Register Star.

Terance Doddy was taken into custody after he crashed into a tree following a 40-minute chase, the newspaper reports, between Beloit, WI, and Rockton, IL.

Doddy is wanted in the deaths of a Rockford man and a woman at a rest stop off Interstate 39.

Police believe Doddy, 36, killed Todd Hansmeier at a call center in Rockford on July 1 where Doddy was a supervisor,WKOW reported. Hansmeier's body was set on fire and was found after the building's sprinkler system went off. A warrant has been issued for Doddy in Hansmeier's murder.

Police believed Doddy was a threat to public safety. He switched vehicles after killing the woman at the rest stop. The alert came as many people begin their travel plans for the coming Fourth of July holiday.

On July 2, Hansmeier's 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, the vehicle police believe Doddy was driving, was found at the Willow Creek rest stop off of I-39 near Paw Paw, Illinois. Investigators say that surveillance footage at the rest stop captured footage of a man attacking and killing 44-year-old Tonya Bargman of Monticello. Police said Doddy is a person of interest in the case and that Bargman's vehicle, a grey Nissan Altima with the license plate B-A-R-G-M-N-2, is missing, WKOW reported.

The rest stop where Bargman was attacked is about 30 miles west of Aurora. Police have issued a nationwide alert for Doddy.

Police do not have a motive for Hansmeier's murder. Doddy and Hansmeier knew each other. Hansmeier worked in insurance and had done work for the call center where Doddy worked, the Rockford Register Star reported. Hansmeier was hit with a blunt object and stabbed.

The newspaper reported that Doddy had become estranged from his wife. Doddy was charged with domestic battery on June 18and was accused on kneeling on his wife's chest, preventing her from breathing. An order of protection was entered barring him from contact with his wife and child.
