Park Forest Man Charged with Murder After Gas Station Shooting

The owner of the gas station told Tribune reporters the shooter waited for police to arrive.

A Park Forest man was charged with murder after the Tuesday morning shooting death of Robert Fortson of Chicago Heights at a local gas station, according to police.

Dennis Joyner, 60, was in a dispute with Fortson over a rental property that Joyner owned, police learned during their investigation. The dispute ended with Joyner shooting Fortson several times at the Mobil gas station in the 400 block of Lincoln Highway, according to Head of Detectives Joseph Bruni.

The State's Attorney's office has charged Joyner with first degree murder. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office ruled the death a homicide from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police were initially called just before 11 a.m. on Sept. 11 about a shooting at the gas station. When they arrived police found Fortson, 40, in the parking lot with several gunshot wounds, according to police.  personnel took Fortson to St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights where he was pronounced dead on arrival, according to police.

Mobil store owner Mike Husain told Chicago Tribune reporters the shooter, who had not been identified as Joyner, was buying a newspaper and paying for gas when Fortson walked in.

The two got into an argument and the gunman chased Fortson into the parking lot before shooting him several times. The gunman then waited for police to arrive, Husain said.

Joyner is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing at Markham Courthouse Sept. 13 at 9 a.m.

@ Pray About It...Dennis' friends and family members were at work. They are hard workers and upstanding citizens in their communities. By the way, Dennis was on his way to work. He stopped at the station to purchase gas and a newspaper. PrayAboutit...did a comment PROVOKE you to use such foul language?
Tazzie September 14, 2012 at 03:34 AM
So in between stopping for gas and newspaper he gets so enraged to pull a weapon on an unarmed person AND MURDER THEM??? I mean RIGHT IS RIGHT AND RIGHT DON'T WRONG NOBODY (My Granny used to say), Where is the logic in that?? I am soo stunned.
Y September 14, 2012 at 04:21 AM
@ Tazzie...Dennis did not wake up that morning plotting to kill anyone. I agree right is right and wrong is wrong. Something was said to enrage him, what we don't know. Do I think he should have killed him? NO, I don't. This is what I think, EVERYONE, who knew both of these guys may have waited too long to step in and offer conflict resolution. This is much deeper than the surface comments we are making. I am really trying to get an understanding.
Tazzie September 14, 2012 at 04:55 AM
"EVERYONE, who knew both of these guys may have waited too long to step in and offer conflict resolution." When did it become EVERYONE'S responsibility to step in and do anything. This is an elderly man who is,,, (or at least should be able to) control himself just enough as to not commit 1st degree murder, which carries a MANDATORY 20 years to life sentence, and as a professional of the law, I'm sure he was aware of, but had JUST that much contempt, malice and hatred in his heart as to not ever regard the severe consequences that he will not only inflict on himself, but the all families involved. He took away a father of small children, how do you tell a child that his father was murdered for purely NOTHING???

Hey. We are all sisters and brothers occupying the same planet. It is our responsibility to help our sisters and brothers. I don't know the victim or the shooter, but I can gather from the posts that a feud was brewing... Conflict resolution is a good idea before the kettle whistle blows. Offer a hug, an ear... anything. God bless everyone.

Tazzie, the man was a State Trooper his whole life. I'm sure on more than one occasion he was provoke thought the years as an officer. That man finally snapped after the others ignorant commens and threats from weeks prior. Being provoked does NOT Give him the right to kill another, but threatening his life SURE AS HELL DOES.
David September 14, 2012 at 06:49 PM
Actually it doesn't, not legally at least. Self defense is only acceptable if you believe you are in imminent physical danger. It is not a legally acceptable defense against a mere threat. By your logic, someone could say to me, "I'm going to kill you" and then get in their car and drive 5 miles away, and I would be legally justified in chasing them down later in the day and shooting them in the back. That's not self-defense. That is murder.
M Johnson September 14, 2012 at 07:01 PM
To Mr. Dennis Joyner: We love you! We support you! These people just have no idea who the "victim" really is. Wow, I mean really people. Only one can stand in judgement and that does not include any of us who can NOT give or life. How twisted and distorted and blinded 98% of this population of people are. Does death equal "victim"? Dont bother to answer.
keitia white September 14, 2012 at 09:22 PM
the problem that i have is even if the victim did make a threat and the suspect shot him, why would he continue to shoot him once he was down? That right there is the actual murder and as a graduate of law I know that is beyond self defense and goes into murder just because the victim was defensless and not to mention he was already wounded and hurt. So from the facts ive heard and ive gotten inside facts, Mr.Joyner will possibly be going to jail for life-which as a graduate of law that is what he deserves. This is strictly a professional insight from someone who is looking from inside.
Tazzie September 14, 2012 at 09:23 PM
No,, death does NOT equal victm,, but 1st degree murder does.
ginamarie September 14, 2012 at 09:24 PM
@ David, if you go around telling people you're going to kill them, expect that shit. 5 minutes or 5 miles away.
ginamarie September 14, 2012 at 09:25 PM
He said don't answer, for that reason..
keitia white September 14, 2012 at 09:29 PM
you are right but by law (and good morals) if there is no proof to say the victim was a threat and he is killed then that does make them the victim! Its critical you have facts straight before taking a side so straighten yours out
keitia white September 14, 2012 at 09:30 PM

Tazzie September 14, 2012 at 10:21 PM
Straighten out what facts?? What facts do YOU preceive as being crooked? Facts (from video survelliance and eye witness account) at TIME of incident; 1. UNARMED person 2. ARMED Person 3. Argument ensued 4. UNARMED person WALKED away. 5. ARMED person shoots UNARMED person in back 6. ARMED person CONTINUED shooting while UNARMED person was a COMPLETE NONTHREAT ????????? Whats there to straighten out?
keitia white September 14, 2012 at 11:28 PM
you are correct @ tazzie my previous comments were for M.Johnson.

I grew up with Jermain, I think we all should seek God and continue to pray. I no nothing is going to bring him back. It's not in our hands! God has to handle this and He will. He makes no mistakes! We can go on on on and get no where everyone is hurting on both ends especially on Jermain. Regardless of ANY situation no one should take a life! Let God make that decision! I don't no Joyner but I no he did something that he will have to deal with for the rest of his life. I can say that Jermain is in a better place yet we prefer him to b here with us but that wasn't our call. So if we all can air out and pray and trust God everything will b ok! And if anyone understand this here is not home this is just a visiting place so let's learn to forgive n love more so we can see Jermain again!

I grew up in Chicago Heights in the 60's and early 70's. I loved that town. Between Park Forest and the Heights it appears neither town is any better than Chicago's south side. The gang thugs have taken over. Its a dam shame.

Mrs Williams Yes he will have justice served by man, but he will face a higher power when he is gone. I feel for your family and we will keep them in prayer. This man will rot in the fire of hell for the rest of his life, and will relive this moment every minute while being there.
Oak Lawn Resident October 09, 2012 at 12:21 PM
The old days we used our fist's to settle a arquement , now today it is easier to pick up a gun and just shoot someone, then say "I INNOCENT" what a coward
Oak Lawn Resident October 09, 2012 at 12:25 PM
NEED to KNOW I think you really need to know something before you type it. this man SHOT A GUN , he SHOT A GUY AND MADE SURE HE DIED. WHAT IN THE WORLD IS THERE TO KNOW? ARE YOU SERIOUS. HE IS A COWARD, SO IF I GET A GUN AND SOLVE ALL MY FIGHTS WILL THAT BE OK. I THINK YOU NEED TO SEE THE BIG PICTURE THIS MURDERER IS A COWARD PERIOD. SOLVE ISSUES WITH A FIST NOT A GUN. AND OF COURSE THERE IS ALLWAYS THE CASE OF SELF DEFFENSE... PLEASE THIS GUY COULD HAVE STOPPED AT THE FIRST SHOT, BUT 5 TIMES..... WHAT A JOKE GET REAL AND PLEASE DO NOT POST AGAIN.
Oak Lawn Resident October 09, 2012 at 12:28 PM
THOU SHALL NOT KILL.... That is the comandments. please give me a break. this man knew what he was going to do and SHOT HIM IN THE BACK.... that is a coward who cant use his fist because he would get beat down. I DO NOT FEEL ONCE OUNCE OF SORRY FOR THIS MURDERER. I HOPE HE ROTS IN JAIL AND I JUST WISH I WAS A JUROR, I HANG HIM PERIOD AND WATCH HIM DIE.
Tazzie October 10, 2012 at 02:29 AM
I don't understand where all this "compassion" is coming from for a man who shot another person in the back for purely NOTHING. Where is thecompassion for Jermain's family,,, his children who are fatherless,, his mother who had to bury her son,, a brother who is without his best friend??? Where is the bleeding heart for them??? Now this murder is requesting to be put kn the medical ward at CCJ because he has a heart condition and gout,,, Really!! He HAS to stand in judgement for what his EVIL heart had conspired!!!! Thats just the truth...
monique October 17, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Omg....JERMAINE???? Does anyone know if thats him
monique October 17, 2012 at 12:05 PM
Okay so I read the comments and it hurts me that's him...but i'm more pissed at the know it all asses on here that support this murderer!! Obviously Miss graduate of law there, needs to go back to school then because she falls short of realization that it does not matter what Jermaine said or did, HE DID the right thing which was to walk away from that loon
monique October 17, 2012 at 12:06 PM
And what ends up happening to him?? He loses his life!! Get a clue already!!
heardaboutit October 30, 2012 at 04:11 PM
Fortner said he was going to his car to get his gun from the trunk. Fortner had broken into Joyner's house many times, trashing the place, and had threatened his life many times before - as reported to me by a relative.
