Park Forest Man Denied Bail After Gas Station Homicide

Dennis Joyner, charged with first-degree murder, was denied bail at a recent hearing.

A 60-year-old Park Forest man, charged with killing a man over a rental dispute, will remain in jail after a Markham Courthouse hearing, Sept. 13.

Judge Douglas J. Simpson denied Dennis Joyner bail after Joyner was charged with first-degree murder by the State's Attorney's office.

Cook County prosecutors say Joyner shot and killed Robert Fortson, 40, at a Mobil gas station in Chicago Heights. The owner of the gas station told Tribune reporters Joyner waited for police to arrive after emptying his gun into Fortson in the parking lot of the business.

Joyner is a retired Illinois State Police trooper with no prior criminal record, Sun-Times media reported. He had been in a dispute with Fortson over a property Joyner was renting to the victim, according to police.

He is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 3.
