Update: Pedestrian in Critical Condition After Halsted Crash

Chicago Heights Police are investigating the accident, but a Cook County police officer said those close to him were affected.

Updated at March 12, 2012, at 2 p.m. with information from the Chicago Heights Police Department.

A pedestrian is in critical condition after being stuck by a white station wagon at the railroad crossing near East End Avenue and 17th Street, according to Chicago Heights Police.

The vehicle also hit a pedestrian, a light pole and a parked van before decimating the Illinois Business Development Center sign on 17th Street and Halsted Street in the accident, which occurred just after 7:30 a.m., police said.

The initially took the victim to before the pedestrian was airlifted to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn. The driver and passenger of the station wagon were also taken to St. James to be treated for injuries, police said.

Cook County Police Officer Marc Wiley said the station wagon nearly caused a T-bone collision with his wife's car, with his daughter inside, after the driver ran the stop sign this morning.

Police have not announced any arrests or charges. The and the S.M.A.R.T. Task Force are conducting this accident investigation.
