Police Blotter: Sucker Punches and a Slap-Happy Nurse

Burning Lights

After receiving a call from an employee at Prairie State College about smoke and a burning smell coming from a room at the school, the Chicago Heights Fire Department determined that ceiling lights were malfunctioning and notified the school's maintenance department, according to the police report.

monday, feb. 14

Battery

Kathyleen Johnson, 43, of the 400 block of West 16th Place, and Richard McDaniel, 20, of the 5200 block of Normal Blvd. in College Park, Ga., were arrested in connection with battery, according to police. A 22-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman told police McDaniel and Johnson attacked them after a verbal altercation.

Naughty Nurse

A 41-year-old woman told police her mother was slapped in the mouth by a nurse at St. James Hospital a little after 6 p.m. on Feb. 13.

Armed Robbery

A Chicago Heights woman told police she was robbed at gunpoint near the intersection of Hickory Street and Minette Lane. The woman said that while she was driving with the window down, a man yelled to get her attention before a second man approached her window and placed a gun to her left cheek, stating, "Give me everything you got," according to police. The woman said the men then stole her cell phone and ran toward Hilltop Avenue.

Apple Thief

A 28-year-old man told police someone broke into his home through a kitchen window and stole a flat-screen TV, Apple MacBooks, a digital camera and two iPod Nanos sometime between 6:40 a.m. and 8:45 p.m. The suspects exited the residence through sliding doors in the kitchen, according to police.

Citgo Sucker Punch

A 21-year-old man from Olympia Fields told police he was at the Citgo station in the 500 block of West 14th Street when a man drove up in a green Toyota Camry, jumped out of the car and punched him in the face with a closed fist before getting back into the vehicle and driving off.

It Does a Body Good

Alonso Tavares-Perez, 28, of the first block of West 25th Street,  was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after police attempted to stop him for driving without headlights or taillights and swerving, according to a police report. Tavares-Perez refused to stop for police and eventually pulled into a gas station parking lot before immediately getting out of his car and leaning against it, police said. After the officer told him to get back into his car, Tavarez responded, "I just came for some milk, dude," according to the report.

DUI

Tyrone Bush, 56, of the 3800 block of Union Avenue in Steger was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after he was stopped for speeding near the intersection of Chicago Road and Forest Avenue, police said. After the officer found an open bottle of Heineken beer behind the passenger seat, Bush admitted to drinking two beers earlier in the night, according to police. He registered at twice the legal limit after taking a Breathalyzer test, police said.

DUI

Fernando Lagunas, 27, of Nashville, Tenn., was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after he was stopped near the intersection of 14th Street and Chicago Road for straddling lanes and not using a turn signal, police said. Lagunas took a Breathalyzer test and registered at more than twice the legal limit, according to police.
