Burglar Grabbed Cash, Bullets and Video Games from Apartment: Blotter

Chicago Heights police reports, Feb. 25 to March 3.

SATURDAY, MARCH 3

Attempted Burglary 

A man in the 300 block of Hickory Street told police that someone had tried to climb through his bedroom window at about 11:48 p.m. The window was cracked open and a garbage can, which had been in his backyard, was moved under the window outside the home. Nothing was taken from the bedroom. No suspects were found.

$1,800 Cash Stolen

A Chicago Heights woman lost $1,800 she kept in her bedroom, according to a police report. The woman told police someone took the money from her bedroom closet earlier that day. Several people were at the home during the time the money went missing. No one was arrested in connection with the theft.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 27

Grand Theft Apartment

Cash, bullets and video game consoles were reported stolen from a home in the 1900 block of Chicago Ridge, according to a report. The victim told police he returned home to his apartment at about 11:50 p.m. and found the doors to the common area and his apartment forced open. After checking his possessions, the man found that $680 cash, 50 bullets, a Playstation II, an Xbox and a Playstation Vita, including all of his games, were missing.

MONDAY, FEB. 25

DUI Charges

Deon Smith, 29, of the 1100 block of Union Avenue, Chicago Heights, was charged with driving under the influence, DUI with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08 and failing to yield for a left turn, according to a police report. Smith, who was driving with two passengers, was stopped at about 10:38 p.m. near the intersection of 14th Street and Scott Avenue. Police said Smith pulled into traffic in front of an officer. During the stop, Smith reportedly admitted to drinking one beer. An officer was able to smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. A cup of Cognac had spilled onto the passenger-side floor. Smith took breath tests both on the street and at the Chicago Heights Police Department. Both tests scored higher than 0.08, according to police.
