Bloom 206 Hires Former Principal as Superintendent

Board President Henry Drake says he has wanted the new hire since last year.

The supported the hiring of Lenell "Doc" Navarre as superintendent at their Monday night meeting.

Board Member Pat Donahue was not present for the vote, but the present members voted unanimously in favor of Navarre.

Board President Henry Drake said he supported the hiring partly because of Navarre's aggressive approach to trimming the fat without compromising student performance.

"Our best thing right now is to try to save money, bring up grades and test scores," Drake said. "Doc is in the process of saving us money."

Navarre's experience as principal and assistant superintendent were also noted as key strengths when board members discussed his hire. Navarre took over as acting superintendent after his predecessor, Glen Giannetti, suffered a stroke in June before retiring in October.

"We're very fortunate to have this man as superintendent," said board member Robert Rossi. "I think we're going to take a huge step forward."

The new superintendent expressed his gratitude in a packed board room, which included Glenwood Mayor Kerry Durkin and Ford Heights School District 169 Board President Gregory T. Jackson.

"I'd like to thank my savior as well as my family," Navarre said after the approval. "It also makes my job easier when you have a great administration. There are some brighter days to come for District 206."

Navarre was given a three-year contract with an option for a fourth year, according to Drake.

"I've wanted him from day one," Drake said. "I knew he was ready around September. I never doubted him. I'm proud he's our superintendent."
