Can Ex-Convict Mel Reynolds Take Back the Second District?

The former congressman has a dark cloud over his head after going to jail for having sex with a minor in 1995.

Would you vote for a convicted sex offender? That's not the question former congressman Mel Reynolds says you should ask yourself.

Jesse Jackson Jr.'s predecessor lost his seat in 1995, after he was convicted of criminal sexual assault and solicitation of child pornography and sentenced to two-and-a-half years in state prison. While he was there he was also convicted of federal financial and campaign fraud charges.

With Jackson gone, Reynolds wants his old job back.

"I'm not perfect and if you're perfect, I'm not appealing to you. I'm appealing to people who want to take a fair look at all of my history, all of my work, all of my education, what I've done since those times, what I've done before those times. That's all I'm asking," Reynolds told Tribune reporters.

Reynolds was released from prison in 2001 after President Bill Clinton commuted his sentence.

Read more about Reynolds' election bid in the Tribune article.

Reynolds has plenty of competition, including former U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson and Jackson's recent opponents Marcus Lewis and the Rev. Anthony W. Williams. Newly re-elected State Sen. Toi Hutchinson has also announced plans to put together a campaign.

Gov. Pat Quinn set a special primary election date for Feb. 26, with a general election tentatively schedule for March 19.

Are you serious?? he's a crook also!!!
Tim Pursell November 29, 2012 at 05:47 PM
Sarcasm, right? I sure hope so. We sure have a deep bench when it comes to political choices around here. Lots and lots of losers.

The Editorial Board of the Kankakee City News has endorsed State Senator Toi Hutchinson in the upcoming Democratic Party Primary for election in the 2nd Congressional District the newspaper believes Senator Hutchinson has the knowledge and ability but more importantly, the honesty and sense of community to represent the interests of the people of the 2nd Congressional District. James H. Taylor Sr. – Publisher - ( I will be seeking the Republican nomination for the 2nd Congressional District and hopefully, will have the opportunity to debate Senator Hutchinson on the issues facing the residents of our district. Ours would be a campaign based on positive issues and alternatives and suggested courses of action to improve the quality of life for the people of the 2nd Congressional District. I suspect the main issue we will disagree on is I am pro-life and perhaps she is not. The other differences will center around budget and programming but the important thing is that we won’t get side tracked on none merit issues!)
Phillip R Baggs November 29, 2012 at 06:11 PM
He was endorsed by Obama and Durbin and will bring home the bacon.
Phillip R Baggs November 29, 2012 at 06:12 PM
James, Maybe you can give a free concert at the Dwight Welch amphitheater? Did Carly really write that song about you?
Dinkum November 29, 2012 at 06:30 PM
Correction, you seem to believe it. Share with the rest of us, in detail highlighting his accomplishments, why he is most qualified. Response tip: One sentence won't do it. Not even two. Let's see if you can present a thoughtful, researched position. I'm betting no.
Dinkum November 29, 2012 at 06:41 PM
Great, another generic endorsement with no data. So much for adhering to high journalistic standards. You'll need to be more specific JT. And the pro-life stance is a clear negative IMO.

"As a state legislator, Todd was a strong voice for expanded health care for children and families. In these times, when health care is a crisis for so many families, Todd's commitment is to repair and strengthen the county health system, which is the safety net for the poor and working poor. As an alderman, Todd's worked assiduously to improve housing and public services in his ward, with a particular emphasis on programs to help children. This, too, is an important commitment in the leader of a county government which often is called upon to step in and help kids in need. Todd is a good progressive Democrat, who will bring those values and sensibilities to the job. "
Dinkum November 29, 2012 at 08:20 PM
Sorry, R. Those generic, meaningless phrases like "strong voice" and "worked assiduously" won't fly. You failed this assignment.

The President of the United States endorsed Stroger....good enough for me.
Phillip R Baggs November 29, 2012 at 10:02 PM
Toi will be the machine candidate. She is in bed with Lisa Madigan
Ed November 30, 2012 at 11:34 AM
This guy represents everything that is wrong with our country.
Dan November 30, 2012 at 02:32 PM
Good link Blackhawks fan. I love when a story is spun out of context. Baggs is a clear example of sheep following the flock. Tod is an idiot. He has shown his ability when handed his father's board presidency. Like the others, he is the perfect model of someone with zero qualifications being endorsed by the machine. Perhaps he should get the Berrios nod. He couldn't even win the primary after his first term as board president. If he is the Dem's choice maybe a qualified opponent can beat him.
James Longstreet November 30, 2012 at 02:45 PM
Pity the people in the 2nd District. The choices they have for the most part are pathetic! Just for kicks...is Gus Savage still around? LOL
Phillip R Baggs November 30, 2012 at 04:22 PM
Dan, You had better milk the system while you can, because you are paying for it now. We will get bailed out by Obama our savior.
JACQUES CARR December 01, 2012 at 04:25 AM
ALRIGHT CHICAGO HERE IS THE GENRE OF REALISM IN WRITING FOR YOU. MEL REYNOLDS IS A CHILD MOLESTING, CHILD PORNO READING FREAK AND TODD STROGER IS .....A NICE GUY WHO HAPPENS TO BE SO DAMNED STUPID FOR MISHANDLING $500,000.00 THAT HE MIGHT GO TO PRISON. THANK YOU BYE BYE AND GOOD NIGHT .
James Longstreet December 01, 2012 at 08:59 PM
"Obama our savior" I have heard it all now! Anybody see him walk on water lately?
James Taylor December 02, 2012 at 05:23 AM
Bet this media and some of those who respond would be better off on late night comedy television. That is very unfortunate as this could well be an important and positive method of communication but for the horse butts who would rather crack their stale jokes, or maybe smoke crack and smell stale.
James Taylor December 02, 2012 at 05:32 AM
Dinkum, is it your position that I or anyone else should be ashamed of being pro-life. Bet you would have been right at home looking, no peeking, out your window as the Nazi troops removed the Jews from your neighborhood. Maybe you would have been one of those good folks who would have attended those rallies, you know the one's they conducted on or near the night of the broken glass! I have lost all patience for folks who believe abortions are a Christian method of birth control. How sick and anti-Christ that is! I know the abortion spree is legal, that to move to prevent abortions is illegal and other than voice my opinion of being pro-life that is about all I can do to help the unborn children. As for you, sir, I guess you are a Sir, you also have the right to believe as you wish on abortion and you also have the law on your side, so at least allow those of us who disagree, the right to disagree without your insults or worse. I am so very happy that nobody aborted your mother, or her mother or you, now what makes you better than the unborn child? As for a vote, i WOULD NOT TRADE A VOTE FOR THE LIFE OF AN UNBORN CHILD SO IF MY OPINION a pro life costs me votes, so be it. Guess Jesus did not get very many votes of support while they were nailing him to the cross, so what can a poor black Republican like me expect. God bless you who ever you are!
JACQUES CARR December 03, 2012 at 12:35 AM
Phillip Baggs is such a liar! President Obama never endorsed Stroger for the 2nd Congressional District. I can assume that Phillip Baggs is an 8th Ward area rump kissing resident. John Stroger is dead and you ought to stop kissing his rump ! Todd his son can't handle a Congressional seat. John (RIP) would be about 30 years older than me if he were still alive. John had me pass out his birthday cake at his birthday while he played Annie Lennox during the 1st Harold Washington election. JOHN AND MARIAN TAUGHT ME HOW TO FIGHT THEM AND BE TUFF ! MARIAN HATED BUTT KISSERS. STOP KISSING TODD's RUMP ! JOHN AND MARIAN TAUGHT ME HOW TO HATE THEM AND FIGHT AND NO MATTER WHAT DICK DASTARDLY DIRTY STUNT I PULLED IT WAS THEM WHO TAUGHT IT TO ME AND THEY WOULD BUST UP LAUGHING AT IT. IF THEY WERE STILL ALIVE I WOULD PITCH A HOOCH ON THE LAKE FRONT NEAR STEPHAN DOUGLAS TOMB AND SHOW SOME OF THE BEST STRATEGIES AND YES TACTICALS AROUND AGAINST YOU RUMP KISSERS. JOHN AND MARIAN PROBABLY WOULD HAVE COME TO GET ME PERSONALLY LIKE THEY HAD DONE MANY TIMES BEFORE. STOP KISSING TODD's RUMP ! MARIAN HUMES PAID ME WELL TO WORK FOR HER REELECTION STARTING IN 1982 or SO AND 1st THING SHE TAUGHT ME IN HER WORDS WERE "JACQUES DON'T YOU DO NOTHING INTHIS BUSINESS FOR FREE BABY NEVER ! " JOHN AND MARIAN ALSO TAUGHT ME THAT THEY HATED ASS KISSERS IN MARIANS OWN WORDS AS SHE SHOWED ME CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS FROM PEOPLE WHO SHE WONDERED WHY THEY GAVE HER MONEY ! SO STOP THE RUMP KISSING !

PS. ORLANDO JONES (RIP) ACTUALLY WAS SORT OF ............. HEY WAIT THIS COMMENT IS BENEATH ME.
Tay I'Indi December 03, 2012 at 06:12 PM
Easy to judge from the sidelines. Convicted or not, some things belong and remain in the past! He who is here who has never done something or made a mistake they are ashamed of, go ahead and cast the first stone. I personally think we all deserve a second chance. As he, Mel Reynolds, rightly pointed out, we cannot, should not, look at his one erring in isolation from all the good that come from the times prior and after his conviction(s). There's got to be some good in this man - no matter what! That he deserves to represent the people is another matter entirely. All I'm noting is that WE ALL DESERVE A SECOND CHANCE.
James Bond December 03, 2012 at 06:58 PM
Tay, yes everyone does deserve a second chance. BUTTTTTTTTT. This guy took advantage of a underage girl who he is suppose to support laws to protect children from predators as himself, instead he took advantage of it for his own satisfaction. HE GETS NO PASS FROM ME OR OTHERS JUST ON THAT ISSUE ALONE. Well, at least we know he has at least two votes, His and You.
James Taylor December 03, 2012 at 07:07 PM
Mel is right, everyone deserves a second and even a third chance. Jesus said something about 70 times 70. What may have confused Mel is that he may have, and I hope he has received forgiveness from God for his sin against that young girl, and I really hope he is sincere and will go one day to be with the Lord. I wonder however, what he will say when he sees that young woman who he took advantage of and I also wonder what she will think then and just as important, what does she think now having matured and seeing this abuser running for federal office. God forgives but there is nothing that says once forgiven, people like Mel should be allowed to abuse again and if he is elected, guess what, he will again be surrounded by things that may tempt him, you know things he couldn't seem to resist, like under age girls, money and fraud. I would rather see good old Mel do something else, like get a job! You know a real job, but nothing that requires trust? Guess he could run for Governor of Illinois.
Dinkum December 03, 2012 at 09:00 PM
It's my position the government should stay out of the religion/morality game JT and stop interfering with people's personal choices. Prior to this post I thought you were harmless. Now, given the Nazi reference and other zealot text, I see you are not.
James Taylor December 03, 2012 at 10:03 PM
Dinkim or what ever, good for you at least that your mother did not decide to abort, good for you indeed. As for opinions, you know what they say about opinions!
JACQUES CARR December 07, 2012 at 04:38 PM
UH OH JOHN STROGER WAS 40 YEARS OLDER THAN ME.
Bobby Breeze December 14, 2012 at 12:58 AM
The more important underlying issue is the fruadulant "Trustee" Marc Wiley. Wiley is currently suspended from his Sheriff's Office job without pay for criminal activity and illicit associations with known gang members from the Ford Heights and Chicago Heights area. Wiley is also under an evictions order to vacate a state owned property he has not made one rent payment on. Also, a high end car dealership is currently attempting to recoup funds from a fraudulent deposit Wiley made in an attempt to purchase a vehicle. His vehicle have been repossessed, he is being sued for back child support, and currently has no job. This "Trustee" has shamelessly fooled the governing body at Prarie State and continues to front himself off. If you care to talk Christopher Paiceley, send me an email; I'd be more than happy to share with you plenty more.
Bobby Breeze December 14, 2012 at 01:51 AM
Speechless???? Coming from you, that is deplorable. You are as fraudulant as they come. Show us your "Degree" from Lewis University. Produce a check stub from the Sheriff., heard you got fired.... Inform us on your paternity suit you refuse to pay child support on. Where do you live again? Go away Marc Wiley. Your game is very close to exposure. You are a joke!
