Caution: Road Work Ahead in College Point Neighborhood

Residents in the College Point area will notice that several streets are being resurfaced, along with tree removal and street light work. The efforts are expected to last until June 28, with work daily from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.

Roads in the College Point area of Chicago Heights will get a major revamping this June.

Roads will be resurfaced, along with Ash trees removed and streetlights fixed.

The entire project, which is expected to cost $220,000, is funded by a Cook County Community Development Block Grant. The grant allows for the city to do more than just resurface roads, according to Housing Department Director Joanne Doggett.

“We used to just do the repaving,” Doggett said in a release. “Now we go in and address every single thing we can address as a whole. That includes: streetlights, sewer issues, code violations. They’ve already started tree trimming in the College Point area.”

The city will use $36,000 from its Motor Fuel Tax to cover the costs of engineering the project, while the county grant will cover the resurfacing and constructions costs. A complete list of roads that will be resurfaced in the College Point area include:

  • Lowe Avenue, from Joe Orr Road to Eastgate Avenue.
  • Wallace Street, from Joe Orr Road to Eastgate Avenue.
  • Parnell Avenue, from Joe Orr Road to Eastgate Avenue.
  • Normal Avenue, from Joe Orr Road to Eastgate Avenue.
  • Wallace Street, from Eastgate Avenue to Glengate Avenue.
  • Normal Avenue, from Eastgate Avenue to Glengate Avenue.
  • Eastgate Avenue, from Union Avenue to East End Avenue (East of Normal Avenue).
Along with the above roads, the city council approved repaving all of Parnell and Glengate avenues, which run parallel to the Park District’s Golf Course, at its June 3 meeting. Unlike the College Point area roads, these two avenues will be repaved using funds from the Capital Fund. For more information about the road work, contact the city at 708-756-5300.
