Chicago Heights Steel Nets $1.5 Million Dollar Economic Incentive

Chicago Heights Steel and the City Council expect jobs to be created by an expansion project.

The Heights City Council gave a greenlight to Chicago Heights Steel, approving an economic incentive to enable the firm to advance plans for a $1.5 million dollar expansion, according to a release from the office of Mayor David Gonzalez.

The unanimous council approval Monday for the Cook County Class 8 Economic Development Incentive will allow Chicago Heights Steel, at 211 E. Main Street, to expand a building that currently houses cooling beds and shears for its rolling mill, the release said.

The cost of renovation is estimated at $500,000, while the equipment is expected to expend the rest of the budgeted amount, according to the release.

Once the extension is complete, it will permit steel bars that make garage door openers slightly smaller, which will allow Chicago Heights Steel to meet the specifications of one of its customers, the release said.

The expansion project is projected to create ten to 15 jobs during the construction phase and an increase of eight to 12 jobs when the project is complete.
