City Acquires Historic Building

The new real estate will provide additional office space for city workers.

What once was the Chicago Heights National Bank at 1651 S. Halsted Street is now official city property after the city council voted to acquire the building during its Nov. 4 meeting. The board voted unanimously in support of the acquisition Monday night, with alderpersons Perez, Mosby and Amadio absent.

Chicago Heights Historic Preservation Committee member Pete Petrouski praised the move on behalf of the committee, calling it a “huge step forward” in downtown revitalization.

The historic structure was most recently a detective agency prior to closing its doors for good, until now. Mayor David Gonzalez says the new space will help with overcrowding issues at city hall by housing the city’s economic development offices.

While the building is currently “very well-kept,” according to the mayor, the city intends to invest TIF funds to make necessary repairs, such as a new roof.
