City Hall Christmas Trees Seek Help for Most Vulnerable

At Chicago Heights City Hall, glittering Christmas trees shine a light on some of the neediest Cook County residents.

In the lobby at , a small forest of decorated trees catch the eye with ornaments and lights, as well as tags seeking help this holiday season.

On the South Suburban Humane Society tree, photos of adoption-ready dogs and cats decorate tags. Just a few days before Christmas and New Year's Eve, Maria, Pony Boy, Norm, Jojo and other four-legged friends are looking for a home.

An attached list names the donations needed by the Humane Society: paper towels, hand sanitizer, bleach, newspapers, kitten and cat chow, rabbit and guinea pig food, rugs.

"It's sad to see how the economy affects a lot of people," commented Gonzalez. Interested residents who have not yet adopted a pet or helped a senior still have time to stop by City Hall at 1601 Chicago Road, he said.

"I think we'll keep the trees up through the New Year," Gonzalez said.
