City Names New Director of Public Works

Mike Swortz, 59, was named the new Director of Public Works in Chicago Heights by Mayor David Gonzalez following unanimous approval by the city council on July 1.

Chicago Heights has a new Director of Public Works, after Mayor David Gonzalez and the Chicago Heights city council approved the hiring of a longtime city employee for the role. Mike Swortz, 59, was hired after 30 years of working for the city in the Thornwood Apartments, where he was a maintenance engineer, according to a release from the city.

“I feel honored and grateful to have the job,” Swortz said in the release. “I do have a motto: Do it right the first time.”

Swortz will oversee the Public Works Department, with his responsibilities including maintenance of city buildings, such as City Hall, the fire stations and the police department, along with special projects.
